amcquay's overhauled bag

Recommended Posts

It had better stay this way for a while
Well, my bag has changed top-to-bottom over the past two months. I've gotten more and more honest with myself and moved to clubs more suited to my skill level and swing, believe it or not my scores have even dropped a few strokes. Plus I felt a little silly walking around like a Nike staffer  .

Anyhow, this is my current setup, and apart from adding a gap wedge I really want to try and stick with this setup at least through the end of next season.

Driver - Callaway FT-iQ 10° I-Mix with Aldila NV 65R. This has been a solid club so far. It's just as long as any other driver I've tried this year and just loves to go straight, straight, straight. I would love to try an NVS in it for giggles, but can't find an I-Mix version in 65R or 75R.

3 wood - I had played a Dymo2 3 wood almost all year, but finally got tired of its one dimensional nature. It excelled off the tee for me but I just couldn't hit it off the ground, partially because of it's deep face. After finding the Burner Rescue and going nuts over it, I traded the Nike 3 wood for the 07 Burner and am extremely happy with the change. It's got the stock 50g REAX stiff shaft, but I have a pink NVS 75R on the way and think it will be perfect in this club. I really want an 09 Burner head cover for this guy, I think they look much nicer than the 07.

19° Hybrid - I've tried many hybrids and a 5 wood to fill the 19-20° loft spot this year, and this 07 Burner Rescue won the spot. Right now it has the TM TStep 90 steel shaft in stiff, and while it's been performing well I would eventually like to put something in a bit softer flex in it. I'm undecided if I want to go steel or graphite, but I'm hitting it well enough for now that I'm not too concerned about a change.

Irons - AP1s with KBS Tour 5.5, 4-PW. I love, love, love these heads. I'm pretty sure the shafts are a bit stiff for me, but I've spent some time hitting other GI sticks with a variety of regular flex shafts and these AP1s have stomped all comers into the ground. I'm happy with these sticks and can see them staying in the bag next year.

Wedge(s) - Right now I only have one wedge past the AP1 PW, a CG14 54°. This year I've bagged Mizuno MPT, Nike SV Tour, and Nike VR wedges and the Cleveland is performing better than all of them for me. I definitely want to add a 50° at some point, and maybe a 58°, but I haven't seen a real need for a lob wedge. In fact they usually just get me into trouble, so I may stop at the 54°.

Putter - 34" Rife IMO. I had a Nike Unitized Mako in the bag before this, and I much prefer the weight and feel of the IMO. I've hit a LOT of putters over the past 3 weeks from every part of the price spectrum and kept coming back to the Rife Barbados CS and IMO. I found a good deal on an IMO in the length I wanted and grabbed it, very happy so far. I've only had it for a short time though, so I'm still in the honeymoon phase.

Bag - Nike SQ Tour. I bought this bag for the 14 full length dividers, which oddly enough is exactly what's starting to bug me about it now. They make the bag a bit heavy, and I can't settle on a club arrangement I like. I'm thinking of picking up a light carry bag like the Sun Mountain 3.5 next year.
Sweet set up but 54* only? (plus pw of course) but no 58*
I may pick one up at some point, but so far I've been able to do what I've needed by opening up the 54°, changing ball placement, etc. I tend to reach for a lob wedge more than I really should when there's one in the bag, so I'm in no hurry to add one.

    • Titleist GT drivers - 2024 the Memorial Tournament
Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
