CT Season Opener

Hey guys, I am new to this forum and I would like to first say Hi. I started playing golf back in September of 2009 and have been hooked ever since. I tried to get as many rounds in as possible and played until the second week of December.lol. I think I got about 20 rounds in until the courses all closed for the season. When do the courses start to open up? I'm guessing sometime in March?

There are a few that stay open year round weather permitting.

My favorite is Shennecossett - it's a Donald Ross design/links style in Groton.

It's a very cool old fashioned style course that's partially on the water.

They've been closed lately because of snow, but I'm thinking they should be open some time this week.

Hopefully the greens will thaw out a bit too - last time I played there they were frozen solid and you basically had to run every shot up and still were more than likely to go over.

Gillette Ridge is a great course...I've driven down from Lowell, Ma a few times to play there with a buddy from CT..

I've also heard great things about Gilette Ridge, and it seems like a pretty well-kept secret. . . probably because it's new.

But they're not open this time of year, are they?

Gillette Ridge is fun but it does have a few funky holes that leaves you scratching your head on how they were designed. The other strange thing, it is built around a coporate bldg (not sure if it's Aetna or Cigna). Looks like your going to work instead of the clubhouse. All in all an enjoyable experience as I've played there a few times. Another nice course a few miles from there is Wintonbury Hills. To me some of the nicest & best kept courses in central Ct. are 3 public courses:Tallwood in Hebron-Timberlin in Berlin & Topstone in I believe So. Windsor (Manchester line). All reasonably priced & all in good shape always. I played 70+ rounds this year (got laid off just in time for golf season) at about 20 different courses & those 3 courses are some of my favorites.

Other great Ct. courses Lake of Isles owned by Foxwoods Casino(very expensive but gorgeous) & Fox Hopyard in Hadaam(expensive also but great layout). don't know who's open all year but right now it doesn't matter-it's pretty cold here in Ct. Maybe if we can get some 40* degree days & get rid of all the snow I might venture out. C'mon spring please come early
