Can't Miss Courses & Good Practice Are

I'm going to be in Austin (from Seattle) for the last week in April while my wife is working. I want to use the week to knock the Seattle winter rust off my game. I'm looking for a couple of can't miss courses and a good short game practice area with enough room to hit some longer pitches. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Check earlier austin post on where to play in Austin. There are a number of good choices and all should be in great condition. As for practicing, I'm not much help. I play out of a couple of clubs that do fairly well there but am traveling for that last week of April and won't be here to perhaps get you on them.
Wolfdancer may have a good area -- I'm not sure but most of the local daily fee courses seem to skimp on practice areas.

Where in Austin are you going to be staying (north/south)? Golfsmith off IH35 and Braker Lane (North) has a nice range and you can probably look for ranges in Round Rock, i'm sure there's a few (I live southwest, so can't help you much with the north locations).

South Austin ranges are pretty skimpy too, I go to the one in Oak Hill sometimes. Jimmy Clay/Roy Kizer (munis) have a real good range, you can drive off the ground (as oppossed to mats) there.

Why not try playing a round at a local muni instead, it'll cost about the same as a large or x-large bucket of balls, about $20 walking. Munis i would recommend: Lions (downtown area), Morris Willimas (east) and Jimmy Clay/Kizer (southeast).

For chipping try looking into Butler Pitch and Putt in the middle of downtown (off Lamar Blvd). This is exactly what the name implies, chipping and putting only. Lots of fun, i think the longest hole out of 9 is 129 yards. Just don;t feed the bums, lol.

Tejas is a pretty full size driving range with grass (no mats here) with a range, pitching area (can be from 50-75 yards depending on wherer the tees are), a chipping area, and a putting green. All the balls you can hit for $12.

It is pretty far North, in Round Rock.

Tejas is probably the best pure practice facility. Ranges in Austin are not good in general.
