OEM Staff Wins on Tour

Recommended Posts

nike leading.. followed by cleveland and cobra..
the following list of wins does not include Tiger's win in Dubai which was a European event.

The * denotes that one of the Ping wins was the Chrysler Classic of Tucson in which the 60 top players in the world did not participate.

the only win on tour this year for Taylormade was Lumpy and he used Ping irons.

Every winner that was not paid to use a driver used either a Titleist or Taylormade which somewhat makes up for the futility of their staff.

these numbers were accurate but i am human and if i made a mistake writing them down feel free to correct me.

pga tour staff wins

Nike - 7
Cleveland - 4
Cobra - 3
Bridgestone - 2
Callaway - 2
Ping - 2*
Mizuno - 1
Titleist - 1
Srixon - 1
Taylormade - 1
MacGregor - 1

This is a great post.

I think it brings some questions-

1) Does it matter what these guys play or are they so good they can win with anything?

2) Which is more important to an OEM- wins or count?

3) Has Taylormade's attempt to "buy" the count been successful in their minds? Only 1 win!

What is more impressive to us mortal golfers? Seeing an OEM claim #1 driver on tour or more wins than anyone on tour and does it make you want to play that equipment?

of the players that did not use their sponsors driver:

taylormade - 4

ogilvy switched after accenture where he used a r7 quad and won the us open with a new cobra xspeed, triplett won the tucson open where the top 60 were gone, the other two were pampling and baddeley.

titleist - 2

luke donald and brett wetterich

everyone else - 0

no one has made the decision to play a better game with a callway ft-3????

one more thing... i'm sure 99% of people on here know titleist and cobra are basically different branches of the same company. i think that is somewhat relevant given the fact that it's not the case with any other manufacturers with wins. and the fact that 5/6 non-irons (but including wedges) that geoff ogilvy used to win the open were titleist.

Taylor Made has pretty much locked down the PGA Tour with tee up money.

But if you look to the European Tour you will see that a lot of winners have used the Ft-3

I appreciate your taking the time and effort to compile this list (don't get me wrong) but I really don't think it holds much if any water. If you really want accurate and telling numbers. Break down the winners of each event in the following categories:

Ball

Driver

Fairway Woods

Hybrids

Irons

Wedges

Putters

Then I think you would have the most accurate and telling depiction of wins. That I would find interesting.

All real run to play with. Numbers are great. Fact remains for the buying public the leading driver manufacturers BY SALES (not wins) are Taylor Made, Callaway, Cobra. They are the only companies dealing in DOUBLE DIGIT sales. All others are in single digits and many low single digits. I think Taylor Made does it with lots of advertising touting driver counts (they certainly don't have a very impressive staff as far as wins), carry over reputation which allows them to still charge premium prices, tons of new SKUs every few months, and performance. Callaway does it with advertising lately touting mostly major wins on PGA and LPGA (could you imagine the blitz had Phil won the open), having a $299 driver that performs as well as others $299 drivers, a premium driver that can be fitted well using the optifit cart, and like all the rest performance. Cobra has done it primarily with people going in and demoing, only recently have they had any PGA wins (which until recently people knew they weren't using Cobra drivers--except JB who used a close-out product), the advertising is humorous but certainly doesn't get people to try a driver. Primarily Cobra has come back due to word of mouth and performance for the consumer. I don't however think the new HS9 series is going to help (too much money for too little--plus it isn't clear who they are going after--the lack of lofts suggests mid to high handicapper). Since the speed series (while an excellent driver--which I play) is pretty ugly to look at I'm not sure they will retain the double digit sales figures by years end.

Gives a nice look at how each companies products are represented in the winners bags...Nike and Titleist have more products in the winners bags than the other OEM's.

Still doesn't translate to retail sales. Taylor Made, Callaway, Cobra remain the only double digit driver sales companies. All the rest including Nike, Cleveland are in the mid to low single digit sales.

no one is saying it does. we're just pointing out the stats.

what do u mean double and single digits??? do you have any more concrete or specific sales figures???
