Is ther any differences?
Hi all,

I searched couple of time but I coudn't find any. So I started this topic :)

I went to Dick's sporting goods to ask and person who works outdoor section if there is any difference btw hunt and golf range finders and told me that hunting range finder is not senstive enough to pick up the flag.

Is it true? If it's true how hunter can hunt small pray such as rabbit or smaller from 800 yards out?

Is there really that much difference between hunt and golf range finders?

Thanks for any help.

I bought a Bushnell Pro Scout a few years ago and while the range and features are similar to the comparable golf model, my experience has been that you must be a surgeon with a steady hand. It is very difficult to laser a flag from anything 175 yards and beyond. Yes, they do great for getting yardages but you must have a fairly decent sized object to laser. I usually try and pick a bunker lip or a tree or a person standing on the green.

I've used golf models that my friends have had on the course and if I wasn't using my Droid X GPS now, I would spend the extra cash for the golf model. It is so much easier to laser a flag with a golf specific rangefinder.

I have the bushnell 1000 for hunting...and it is EXACTLY the same model as the golf one...and much cheaper. got it at walmart.com

I have one too, got it for a lot less than the V2, works great for me. Yeah, from over 200 yards I have a harder time picking up the pin compared to 150 yards, but I think I would with any laser IMO....

the major difference is target priority. if you can find a hunting rangefinder that has the option of choosing first/nearest target priority, you should be ok. if the rangefinder can scan, you should be able to get it done too, but obviously you are going to sweep the area and pick out the nearest distance instead of point and shoot.

that being said, the cheap(er) hunting models usually default to last/distant target priority and not all have a scan mode. this doesn't mean it's impossible to hit a flag, but it does make it much more difficult. things like distance, size of target, how reflective its surface is, weather (rain, fog), and how steady of a hand you have will affect any rangefinder, but any shortcomings may be magnified with a bare bones hunting model since it's not designed to help you isolate a flagstick.

only way to really know with any particular model would be to try it out under the conditions you usually play in. some people suspect that golf specific models and there hunting equivalents are exactly the same and that the golf ones and just re-badged and marked up. while i don't doubt that there may be some mark up associated with golf products, i find it hard to believe (as an engineer and software developer) that the two models are identical. even if the hardware was identical, the algorithm used to determine which target to pick up wouldn't be the same.

I ordered a Leupold RX-600, since it's exactly like the GX-1, minus the pinseeker tech. Turns out the pinseeker tech is really useful. It often took me 10+ seconds to get a hit on the flag rather than the trees behind it. On one hole I hit the wrong club because of a bad reading (I should have been paying closer attention). It's already been sent back and replaced with a GX-1.

  • 4 weeks later...

Update!

I went out and bought "Bushnell Sport 600 Bone Collector" at Dick's sporting goods store becuase I just couldn't justify $200 difference.

I went out to driving range to try out and it seems pick up pretty much everything that my friend's rangefinder pick up, he has Bushnell pinseeker.

I have to say it's not easy to pick up flag but it's possible with a steady hand :)

Ok, I went out play last week with my new rangfinder.

When I go out to play golf, I always measure buckers, front of the green, end of hazzard, back of the green etc...

Actually, I didn't see any difference from other golf rangefinders. My firend always tell me distance to flag but I want to know more than just distance to flag.

I'm really glad that I didn't get golf rangefinder. The way I play golf, this rangefinder works perfect for me.

End of upate.
