Anyone play Camargo Club in Cincinnati?

Recommended Posts

US Am qualifier
So, I've never played and the practice round is the day before which doesn't give me any time to work on a particular part of my game the course might demand.

From what I hear, the greens are large and they're very retangular shaped, which I guess means fire for the flag or deal with 60 footers all day.

Anything else? It doesn't seem that long, only 6600 yards..par 70 though.

hey i live in cincy....wish I could be more help, all I can tell you is that it is like the most expensive course in cincy. The memberships are weird, like you have to be a blood relative of one the the founding members to join......the owner of the Reds though just bought his way in. Not to many people get to play it unless it is for a tournament or they are members

I wish I could play it, sorry this comment was useless but just thought I would add

You should caddy for me, lol. During the practice round on June 31st, I'm sure you could play a hole or two :drinks:

Camargo Club, designed by Seth Raynor. I was lucky enough to play the front nine and the back nine on two separate occasions. I used to coach HS golf and we played a few matches against Indian Hill HS, hammering them pretty soundly BOTH times. We were never invited back, not to mention we qualified for state knocking them out of a spot in the process. The course itself is pretty straight forward, nothing crazy, and actually fairly mundane (asthetically speaking anyway) all together. The greens were "perfect", get your line and roll it. The course is only ranked so high on the best courses list because it is crazy hard to get on and they remain an "old money" membership club. Hardly anyone even plays golf there....I can think of 30 public golf courses right off the top of my head that I would have more fun playing; but I'll take those greens any day of the week.Funny, but I kept one of my scorecards from when I played the front nine back in 1996. I shot a 42.

How much do water/bunkers come into play? The course has a fairly high slope/rating for being so short. Is it tight? From the looks of the scorecard, the only questionable holes would be the 454 and 441 yd par 4's, holes 4 and 10 respectively.

I gather the course turns into a veritable putting contest?

I never said "30 Muni's in Cincinnati", I said 30 muni's in general. In fact, most of the public courses in Cincinnati suck compared to other cities of similar size. The Camargo course is ALWAYS in PERFECT condition, it's just not all that great of a design. They can make it pretty tough despite the length. In fact it is really the MYSTIQUE of playing the course rather than the course itself that gets it all the attention.

And what, pray tell, would they do to make the course "pretty tough despite the length" as you say?

Are you qualified to judge course design? To dismiss Camargo's reputation as a product of "mystique" is inane. To categorically state that "it's just not all that great a design" shows a complete lack of appreciation for golf course architecture.Camargo is considered by most cognoscenti to have one of the best collections of 3-pars in America. You tipped your hand earlier when you commented on the membership-envy must have clouded your mind.

The FACT that I have played there previously and have played over 250 golf courses allows me to compare it to many other courses. I never said I was a golf course architect or was speaking of it in any architectural sense (although I truly appreciate golf course architecture in a broad sense, especially Donald Ross designed golf courses). My opinion of Camargo is my own personal perspective based on what I enjoy playing, that fact that you disagree is your own opinion. BTW, have you played there?. As far as par 3 holes, I have also played the Threetops Par 3 course in Michigan that also boasts "quite the collection of par 3's", that doesn't make it the best in the world does it? . I enjoy courses that I play that leave me saying to myself after my round, "Yes, I could play here exclusively." I did not get that feeling after playing Camargo twice. Great course, perfect conditions, but NOT one of my all time favorites. For example, Coldstream CC in Anderson is OVERALL, a much nicer golf course, designed by Dick Wilson, another noted, albeit maybe not on the same level as Raynor, golf course architect. Heck, Portsmouth CC (conditions aside) is a Donald Ross designed course that beats Camargo's layout for layout hands down. As for the Am qualifier course set up, I am sure they can shrink the fairways easily, make the greens ULTRA slick, adding more length they cannot do much about. I only have membership envy for Augusta National. please don't take things so personally, it's not like you designed it or anything. :drinks:

I had the option to play Coldstream, but supposedly 5 of the top 25 mid-ams in Ohio play out of there and it's a difficult course for a first timer.

YES, it is a much more difficult course if you have never played there. Good choice. Have fun at Camargo Club and good luck. If I wasn't on vacation, I would caddy for you for free.

Would you suggest taking one of the course's caddies? I think it's $60 + tip for the day, though I have no idea how much you tip a caddy :drinks:

Probably a local HS kid. Sure, why not? Tip would be around $10 or $15 unless their caddying skills allowed you to shoot a 59, then tip more! :drinks:

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
