Stand Bag's life span

Recommended Posts

What helps?
I'm just curious what will help a bag last longer. I use a stand bag, so things specific to stand bags would be great. Does keeping the bag in the trunk make it wear faster? If storing inside or in a garage, does keeping the legs extended limit their life? Does do any of this REALLY make a difference, or is it all going to end up about the same?

It is all about the number of rounds you play assuming you take care of it. That means keeping it clean, letting it dry out when wet, and most importantly, not beating it with your clubs as some are prone to doing. If you do all of the above a good stand bag should last you at least a few years or a few hundred rounds before the bag just wears out. Buy a cheap bag and it will wear out real fast. By a good bag and it can last you years. I probably take more time in buying a bag than buying a car.

Thanks for the info. I take pretty good care of my bags. Last one lasted about 2.5 years give take. Still works, just stared getting holes in some of the key pockets. I've heard some people on here mention having a bag for 5 years or more. Just was curious if there was anything to help reach that life span. Shopping for a new bag was fun, but also quite a hassle.

They are just like shoes. Take care of them after every round and they last many years. TLC is the key. If you use a cart (not an autocart) don't just let it flop around; secure it so that it doesn't rub on the supports. Sun is hard on a bag and usually a bag starts to look old far sooner than it wears out for me.

I agree with this. I make a conscience effort to keep my towel betweeen my hip and bag to cut down on rubbing. This is the only wear that I have seen.

I find the more I travel with my clubs via airplane the bags wear out quicker. They seem to get smushed over time.

I alway use a different bag for travel as you never know what will happen (it's thrown at least 4 times each way). I do, however, stuff my travel bag with so much stuff (right to the 50 lb limit) that the bag is pretty much insulated.

Humm, my old Nike Extreme (think thats what it is) is in its 5th year and still holding up OK apart from a bit of a mod when the internal reinforcing bar burst through the bottom of the bag. Simple fix with a strip of aluminium/ tin and a pop riveter. But the bag fabric and straps are fine still.

As has been stated I think the real killer is if you ever store it wet

I have an old Champ stand bag from Sports Authority. I just stopped using it last year (switched to a cart bag), but I've had it for over 7 years and it's still in pretty good shape. Fabric, legs, and straps are fine. I've stored it in the garage legs in, wiped it off when needed, but that's about all. I think if you're not abusing the bag, they'll last no matter the brand. I think I paid $59 back in 03'. Every now and then I still use it.

I found that the stand mechanism on my bag is becoming separated from the bag itself. I'm not complaining about the bag quality after 4 years except that the fabric itself is in really good shape.

I'm guessing that I contributed to its downfall by storing it with the legs in use and by having extra clubs in the bag when going to the range and not taking them out when I got back. Based on that I'd say that when not in use either store the bag with the legs folded or take out extra clubs and any extra stuff you might keep in it that adds weight (rainwear, rangefinders, all the balls you found on the course, etc).

I have had my bag for the last 4 years and it is still holding up. I am a senior in high school and whoever i play for in college i will switch to their bag obviously. This will be my 5th year with the same Ping (hoofer or vantage i cant remember). I dont think leaving it in the trunk hurts but if i set it in the garage i always make sure it is upright and off the legs.
