Identify

I found these irons I am considering buying. I can not find any information on them at all. I have heard a story that they were made to commemorate Jack's 67 open win. Which could make sense because the irons are numbered 1-10, and they look identical to the VIP's released in 67. Other than the diamonds instead of crowns and the end line scoring. Thoughts? Thanks.

I believe those are a late 70s model that was sold at Pro Golf Discount. It was a model exclusive to that chain, not a limited edition commemorative or anything of that sort, although the design was certainly taken from the 67 VIPs. That explains why you don't see them in the Kaplan book.

Also, if it matters to you, I am pretty sure those irons are investment cast, not forged. The late 70s Nicklaus VIPs were cast clubs as well.

None of this is meant to suggest they are bad golf clubs. I'm sure they would play as well as any blades MacGregor ever made.

Speaking about Macgregor blades, and I don't mean to hijack the thread, but my grandfather gave me a Macgregor Tommy Armour <iron master> R235 3 iron. He has the rest of the set at his house. Any info on these? I was thinking maybe putting in a new shaft and grip and trying to practice with them to improve my ball striking but want to know a bit more about the club before i tear it apart.

Maltby's "Golf Club Identification & Price Guide IV" doesn't have this one either. The 67 does have the same shape as the VIP, as mentioned above, as well as the Muirfield. There is a difference on the face. While the VIP and Muirfield have diamonds and horizontal score lines, the 67 appears to have vertical lines running down the left and right between the diamonds and the scoring lines.


The only reference in the GCIPG on the R235 is from 1967. "Compact Blade with flat sole, flat back pad with double milling cut separating from top line. Stamps: Sole - MacGregor. Back Pad Tommy Armour. Top Line - Iron Master between arrow points + R235H." It shows they came in Mens RH, Ladies RH and were forged carbon steel. They retailed for $76.50 for set of 9.
