Wedges from Iron Set or Wedges from another brand

I was wondering how many people use Wedges that match your IRon set, specifically, a GW, SW, and LW?

I'm sure the better players on this board use more of a players wedge like cleveland or Titleist but I'm wondering that the forgiveness of the iron set might be better for full wedge shots that the more forged type of wedge. Thoughts? Anyone use these?

IMHO wedges that are matching wedges to your set are a bad idea even for higher handicap players for a number of reasons.

First, if your irons are cavity back, as most are, the matching cavity back wedges will be harder to control distance with. They are great on full shots, but with wedges, most shots will not be full shots.

Second, the forgivingness you need on a 7-iron e.g. is wasted on a sand wedge. Chances are even a higher handicap player can hit a blade type sand wedge pretty well, even on fuller shots.

Third, the soles on cavity back wedges tend to be way too big to be effective around the green. Again, the same features that makes an iron more forgiving is detrimental in a short touch shot. Its really difficult to open up the blade on a cavity back wedge because of the sole width. The larger sole will add too much bounce as you open it up and this makes touch shots very tough, especially out of sand or tight lies.

Thus, even higher handicappers get more benefit from playing blade type wedges. On those rare occasions where you would want more forgiveness from your wedge, chances are you won't be hurt much if you don't have it. On the other hand, the times you will benefit from having a blade wedge that you can open up far outweighs the benefit of forgiveness.

I have both, the 51º AW and 56º SW that match my X-18's and just picked up a X-Tour 56º-13º SW. I love my X-18 AW for full swing shots that are inbetween my PW and SW, but hate the X-18 SW for anything but getting the ball out of the sand. The ball seems to come off the face of the Cast Club hotter causing issues with controlling the ball around the green. Also, it doesn't seem to spin the ball 1/2 as good as the X-Tour Wedge.

But, I seem to be able to get the ball out of the sand much more consistent with the X-18 SW vs. the X-Tour SW. If only I could carry 15 clubs :kewlpics:
