Golf Instruction and Club Fitting Questions
Hello Hawaii WRX'ers.

I'm recently starting to play a lot of golf again and really want to start getting better. To give you a better idea of my skills I shot a 99 at Luana hills last weekend and a 94 down at Fort Shafter the week before. It seems like the more I play the better i hit my driver, wedges and putt, however my iron play is completely terrible. I've been trying to work on it for a while but just can't seem to get it right. From my various reading and video watching i believe i am not creating enough lag and have a hard time hitting down on the ball and my swing plane may be an issue. Due to trying to work on my swing its just getting far to inconsistent. Its very disheartening when I hit a drive 280 - 300 down the center of the fairway and then I still bogey from 60 - 100 yards out. A few years ago anything 150 yards and in was not a problem.

Now i'm thinking i need to take some lessons but also wondering if getting fit for my irons would also be beneficial and if so which should i do first? Or should i do them at the same time?

I current am playing with Nike Pro Combos with DG S300 shafts Standard Length and Lie. (The two times i demo'ed these at Roger Dunn in Kaneohe, i hit them really well.. go figure). My goal is to get better with my iron play so I hit more GIR.

Anyone know where I can get lessons for good value and what are your thoughts on getting my irons adjusted to fit me (loft, lie and length)?

I am 26
I am 5'10 Wrist to floor is 55 inches.
I hit my driver between 270-300.
I currently hit my 7 iron 150 (which i think is because i'm not hitting "down" on the ball).
I have a really high ball flight on my irons. When my ball lands it practically doesn't roll.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Easy...Aloha Golf Center. They've got the launch monitor, camera for full swing and putting, Professional Golfers who will help to instruct and teach you. They're also certified Bettinardi, Ping and Adams fitters. I've heard they're about to be fitters of another very major brand. They are the distributors of Graphite Design and they carry every other major shaft brand including Mitsubishi, Fujikura, Ozik and I've heard they may get Miyazaki soon. AGC is also Hawaii's only True Temper Performance Fitting Center. That means they're also the only certified place in Hawaii to get "TOUR" True Temper shafts. They're also Hawaii's only certified retailer of Miura. You can get pretty much the best of everything all in one location.

***and no, not paid for the plug. Just the information gathered as one of the more prolific golf club ho's in the State.

Statically you are pretty much standard lie with most likely a stiff shaft. AGC can check you out and give you a dynamic fitting, but I suggest modifying your clubs when you are swinging well and not poorly. If you were taller or shorter and playing bad, getting fit to where close to your ideal position could be worthwhile.

As for fixing the swing, lessons are always a good thing. My tip would be to shorten your back swing and get the left shoulder under the chin. from there just check that the club position is decent and hit down and through the target line with your irons. Practice strictly with a wedge for a few sessions. Remember to keep is short for grove and impact purposes.
