Sonartec Fairway Wood Thought

Recommended Posts

When I first got my SS03 16* (about 7 years ago) I was awash with glee. It had a stock Penley Pre Spined, and it was my money club....definately easier to hit than my driver (at the time). I was also playing a Titleist Professional as a ball.

But as time has gone by, my Trusty 4 wood had gotten less and less trusty and I had lost confidence in it. I searched and searched for a replacement (it's just tough to replace a Sonartec...once you get that feel, you cannot go back). I finally, on a whim, ordered up a 16* 3.5 fairway wood with NV shaft.

The glee is back...tight, medium high draw. Great off the deck. Great off the tee. I could not be happier.

My question is this...could the SS03 head no longer be compatible with todays golf balls. The new 3.5 hits it higher and with more pop. I also put both woods to the test on the range...no comparison. SS03 hits it lower and without the explosion that we expect from Sonartec.

Just a thought...what are yours?

Patrick, very nice post and an enjoyable read. I'm glad to see that "the glee is back," especially as I've been experiencing a little bit of the same (NP-99 owner here). ;)

As for the compatability of the SS03 to newer golf balls, very interesting observation, but I don't think that's the case. From what I've read, the SS03 still gets very positive reviews and is still a highly regarded fairway wood in the Sonartec circles. I think your issue with your old club has more to do with the fact that you played it for 7 years--metal fatigue has to come into play! Also, graphite technology has changed "a touch" in the last few years and unless you've recently reshafted your SS03, you're not making a fair comparison. :idhitit:

At any rate, I hope you enjoy your new club and hope that the next one won't be seven years from now!

I love my SS-03 19* with the stock Penley in R flex. Maybe the NV is a better match for your swing?

I am much more consistant with the SS-03 than any other fairway I've tried, and it's been a bunch.

Do I wish the flight off the deck was a little higher? Yep. But after the roll is included, it's just as long if not longer than almost all other 5 woods for me. So, unless I want to carry it to a green with water just in front, the slightly lower than ideal flight is not a problem. In these situations a layup is the smart play for me 9/10 times anyway, regardless of what 5 wood I have in my hands.

It's by far the best FW off the tee that I've ever tried. Just rockets the ball. It's also the straightest FW tee or fairway.

I'm glad you've got a FW you love, they can be hard to find.

I am still in love with my SS-07. Cant go wrong with them but i think they stopped selling them. Furyk still uses it along with Creamer.
