Weight - Heel Toe Middle

Recommended Posts

Where was it
since we are slicing and dicing poor Mr. Hogan into tiny bits so his swing starts to look like coleslaw...
here's my query on where is the weight.
comes about because i was hitting balls last night and i refound something about weight (at least for me).
if i actually favour the weight at address more into the heels (which makes you "sit back"),
i found it much easier to get my hips moving on the forward swing.
Hogan said it was like sitting down onto a shooting stick,
that suggests to me that the weight goes straight down at least, if not favouring the heels.
at impact Hogan certainly has his weight on his left heel, even rolled over with his left toe slightly airborne at times.

this first occured to me some time ago when looking at Greg Norman's swing.
because he hovers the club at address he seems to have this sort of tension where the club is pulling out but his body is pulling back to the rear, in the pic here he definitely seems more "gravity centred" over the middle of his feet than Tiger does in year 2000 for example.

i find this interesting because so many teachers etc. say that the weight should favour the balls of the feet.
i am now thinking the heels are part of the answer for me.

Yep, i also am experimenting with the same "weight on the heels" too. In my Take 14 vid, when you see me pointing down towards my heels (at the 2:22 mark) , I'm reminding myself to get on the freakin heels! Why am I wanting to stay on the heels? Cause when I analyze me vs Hogan, if I'm on my heels, feels like I'm able to stay in better balance. If I get on the balls of my feet, feels like I am throwing the club at the ball.

in my experience most good teachers i have been around have prescribed the weight on the middle of the feet, if you were wearing adidas golf shoes your weight should be right where the 3 stripes are on your shoes. many good players and good teachers prescribe the weight on the balls of the feet (faldo talks about this). after years of practice and experimentation I arrived on having the weight on the middle of my feet, I have no idea what Hogan did, but I think its worth experimenting to see what works best for you.

i think bec if in toe, you bend hips bigger. if heels, you hips bend smaller. if bend smaller, more easy for turn and move hips and lower body.

One of my teaching pet peeves. Weight on the balls of the feet has long been the standard and has never made any logical sense to me, or worked well for me or my students. The justification is that you do so in other sports like tennis, basketball and football. But in those sports there is a strong likelihood that you will move forward, which of course one never does in golf. We teach weight exactly in the middle of the foot toe to heel, the only place where your body is starting out in perfect balance. We call this the Vertical Balance Line and you maintain it dynamically during the swing. Yes, the balance point does shift towards the right heel and inside ball of left foot as you reach the Top of backswing and reverses as you reach the Finish, but these changes kind of cancel each other out so the feel is one of staying balanced in the mid-point of the feet.

Somewhere in my files I have a note about Hogan recommending weight a little toward the heels on the woods and mid-point for the all the other clubs.

This is literally the first thing I check with a new student. I can't tell you how many students I have worked with over the years whose ballstriking has immediately improved when they stop setting up on the balls of their feet and get balanced over the mid-point.
