Longer Shafts in Set Makeup

Because I am tall with short arms I need long clubs for good posture and plane.

 

Would it be foolish to consider the following club lengths/set make up?

 

I'm 6'3" with tall torso and short arms/legs. I really have to reach to ball with lower clubs. So much so that my swing plan and posture is terrible. I'm also 245 pounds and even clubs others consider heavy feel very light to me. I'm not typical.

 

After some recent lessons and swing analysis I think I am on to something here, but I digress to the many knowledgeable and insightful minds who visit the forums. I just want to hear how rational or radical this might be.

last season I played with a guy, tall and slender but had some back issues. He loved to golf but couldn't bend over to hit the shorter clubs, so he had a set custom spec'd from ping where all his irons played to the length of a 3 iron and all had the same lie angle. It seemed to work-out well for his unique situation and he was able to golf relatively pain-free.

what you proposed seems rational, perhaps a good-maker could assist you in your quest

You might have to play with the weights on the shorter irons, with only 1/4" between clubs, but it's doable -- if you can swing the heavier clubs, it's worth a try. And you might have to fiddle with the lie angles a bit, but it's all possible. I know there are a few companies which make single-length iron sets -- all the irons are the same weight and lie. You could look into those, too -- though they're usually set up to play at about 6 or 7 iron length.

I'm 6'2" (270) with extremely short legs (29" inseam) plus very short arms as well. (Plus I'm extremely arthritic and don't bend over as well as the young flatbellies). I play all of my Irons with 2" over length including the wedges. Really makes it easier to swing. Even my driver is over-length (48"). And use large arthritic grips.

So playing with over-length clubs is not that unusual. Go with what feels comfortable where you can get a reasonable full swing. Comfort is important. The only issue with the longer clubs might be control. But that's something that you can do something about with decent full swing mechanics.
