KZG irons - price range?

TNReb

Recommended Posts

I was in a local golf shop today and there were a set of KZG irons. 3-SW or 4-SW ... I can't remember. I picked them up, and they were one of the best looking clubs I've ever seen. I was really surprised. I don't remember the exact model - they may have been the Tour Evolution or something.

They were priced at $700. Seemed high to me for a brand I've never heard of.

Any feedback on that price?

KZGs are pricey. Depending on the shaft combo they are easily $100 a club set. If you buy them you better plan to hold on to them awhile because the secondary market is nonexistent.

They are good forgings but very overpriced. They are almost as much as some mizuno offerings.....they lose their resale value faster than driving a new car off the lot. If you get them be sure you want to stick with them...just my advice

That price isn't bad. KZG makes a really nice product. I would rate them right up there with Miura and Fourteen when it comes to component forged clubs. The deal with KZG is that you can find yourself a set for pretty cheap if you look around hard enough. I snagged a set of KZG blades off ebay for $150 a couple years back. Since KZG's name does not hold the weight of a major OEM their resale value plummets leaving lurking "ebayers" a great deal. But, if you really like the irons I think they are worth the $700 assuming they are fitted to you and are one of the current models.

I have checked them out many times on their website and they do have some great looking irons. Many models to choose from that should suit a variety of levels of play though they seem to favor those that are a 15 and below.

I found a style I liked, even though I am not even within shouting distance of a 15, and thought I would just pick up maybe a 6 and an 8 just to experiment with. I emailed them and asked for prices and explained to them that I wasn't buying a whole set that I just wanted to experiment. They told me to go and find one of their authorized fitters and buy from them. I declined.
Not long after that, as was mentioned earlier, I ran across a few sets of heads on EBay and some other forums with Classified sections and the prices were a fraction of what the new ones were. They were USED, but in EXCELLENT shape. I'm talking less than $10 per club head.

If you like them, great, but you'll get HAMMERED HARD if you want to sell them. You'd probably even have a tough time getting your money back if you bought the heads and never unboxed them.

They do have some gorgeous heads though.

If you are spending 1000-2000 dollars on the whole custom fitted, custom built process the premium pricing of KZG clubheads is only a slight extra expense. And they are nicely made indeed.

If you are just buying off the rack irons, paying that much for new KZG irons is extravagent. Bordering on foolish IMO. You can find used KZG irons for pennies on the dollar, used name brand ones for a few hundred or new name brands with substantial resale value for the same 700 bucks.

I looked at a set a while back. Problem was in th UK they are priced ABOVE mainstream brands and as said would be worth buttons second hand so gave them a miss. Same with Nakashima drivers. Read great reviews but they were 50% more than TM or Cally so another no go.
[/quote]

Naksahima changed policies a couple years ago and narrowed the availabilty, only allowing authorised distributers to sell assembled clubs. And one Top Clubmaker in Asia lost his account.I doubt if that has worked for them.

Similary with KZG they maintained very high minimums for clubmakers and cut those who didnt make it,They had a strange policy proclaiming their top 100 dealers as the "100 best clubmakers in the world" Again I doubt that worked for them.

These days are over!

Here is a link to a conversation about KZG irons and I posted my thoughts on the KZG Evolution if you are interested. Fantastic soft Japanese forgings... perfect if you want a players look/feel in a slightly larger head size.

Word of warning.. not all the KZG irons are the fantastic soft forgings.. I know the Evolution and Zo Blades are, not certain about the rest.

Here's a great example. Look beautiful but you get killed on price http://www.ebay.com/itm/KZG-Forged-Blades-Iron-Set-3-SW-Golf-Clubs-Excellent-Condition-/121177772704?pt=Golf_Clubs&hash=item1c36c212a0

Heck I'd say the seller could get a good portion of that selling price for just the shafts.

The people at KZG also aren't the friendliest bunch to deal with. They seem to think that their stuff is THAT good and you'll pay extra and go to a KZG boutique with one of their hand picked fitters and get their clubs rather than go to Golf Galaxy and get a set of Mizuno irons.
The guy I talked with wouldn't even consider selling me a couple heads to try even after I explained my situation to him. I either went to their fitter and paid the asking price, or go somewhere else. They don't seem to be bothered too much to lose sales from people that actually WANT their stuff. They want to sell it, but ONLY on their terms with NO EXCEPTIONS.
I have a very difficult time believing that they sell the number of club heads to allow them to have the attitude they do. But then again what do I know? They could be selling BOXCAR loads of clubheads and all driving new BMW's to the office each day for all I know.

That link to the Ebay sale on the KZG blades is interesting. I would estimate that the guy that sold those irons paid 3 to 4 times what he sold those for. I'm betting he's got at least $1,000 in that set of irons, probably more.
