Flat Left Wrist at Address (right hander)

Good idea or bad idea? I think if I start with a flat wrist at address it is easier to maintain throughout the swing. It just feels so akward with the longer clubs like driver, 4 iron.

Some people play fantastic with it. It makes me suck the club inside. The ONLY time my left wrist is flat is coming into and through impact.

That's why not many uses it...you have to pull the right arm inside to swing decently...when you pull, gives you lots of problems because you're setup sets you up for a non-pulled right arm...you have to unpull the left or right arm at impact...very hard to do...

In my opinion you have to pull the left arm in backswing, and then push out the left arm in downswing. If you don't pull in backswing, not much power because left arm is not connected enought with the chest. If you pull but dont push out in downswing, you have no room and clubhead will be too under plane, you are destined to hit way before the ball.

I was jut about to start a thread on a similar topic!

I was watching Henrik Stenson at the open and before every swing he does a little forward press with his hands before starting his takeaway, effectively flattening his left wrist.

I used to do this a lot with pretty good results until a recent lesson where the pro told me this was a bad idea and since then i've adressed the ball with my hands in a more normal position. To be honest this has not translated into any better results for me so I was thinking about going back to my wee forward press, seeing how well Henrik was striking the ball has just made me more likely to return to this!

It's easy to overdo that, as well - I was starting my swing with a slight forward press, then had to strengthen my left hand to accommodate for it. Then the press got even further forward, and the hand stronger to the point where it was all 4 knuckles and suddenly found myself delofting the club far too much with a horrible takeaway. Thankfully I'm still relatively new, and don't have a lifetime of swing habits that need to change, but what I discovered is that changing something relatively fundamental can cause other different problems with the swing.

I agree on flat left wrist at impact. My comment is on flat left wrist at address.

Well, if left wrist is flat, you either have to get your upper left arm off the chest a lot or you get the ball way back. Im saying you get the left wrist cupped so you can move it more in middle of your body and upper left arm attached to chest.

I agree with rest of what you're saying though...
