Traditions Golf Club - Bryan, TX

Recommended Posts

I thought you guys might enjoy seeing some pictures from my round today at Traditions Golf club in Bryan/College Station, TX. It's a tough Jack Nicklaus design that's received a lot of praise and one I've been dying to play for quite a while. Even though the surrounding land is flat as pancake, there are some remarkable elevation changes at this course, which my poor photography skills fail to capture. The greens are small, firm, and very penalizing if you miss them. Fairways range from wide to narrow and there are quite a few deep fairway bunkers for you to avoid whether you want to go for it, or lay up.

I was VERY pleased to have the opportunity to play it today despite the 30mph wind gusts. (cool)

The impeccable range, note the pyramids of Callaway HX balls with A&M Logos. Also, you can see the Texas A&M golf team's practice facility in the background, complete with bent putting green despite the blistering Texas temperatures.

Me just after hitting my tee shot on the short par-4, not the plethora of deep bunkers.

Tee shot on the par 5 sixth hole.

Very narrow double green shared by the sixth and seventeenth holes.

Picturesque eighteenth green which plays downhill after an uphill tee shot. Great finishing hole.

Kiran I enjoy the hell out the course and think it's one of the toughest I have ever played. The one thing I don't like is that almost every hole seems to have a creek running in front thus eliminating any chance to roll or bounce the ball onto the green. Sure that is all well and good for the better player but I can only imagine what it would be like for the average player.

Are they making any progress on the clubhouse?

I'm even more upset now that I couldn't make the trip up with you guys. From what I understand the wind was brutal. Kyle and I are going to try and plan another trip up very soon. Maybe we can make it a double - Traditions in the morning, Miramont in the afternoon. (cool)

Sam, you're right, there are a ton of carries to get to greens, although there are generous layup areas just in front of the green if you're out of position.

Right now, the clubhouse is simply a gravel lot, nothing else. However, the pro shop and facilities are quite nice, (although a bit small). Also, the limited membership of 100 doesn't put too much stress on things. I can't wait to see things when done though, Traditions is a first class operation from top to bottom.

This was the first Nicklaus design I've ever played, but I really enjoyed it, it was really tough.

Wind was ridiculous, borderline unplayable. Kyle did hit a 500 yard drive (probably carried it in the 450 range). ;) (cool)

I hope I can tag along next time . . .

He will just take the exemption if he makes it. He made the field for the AJGA JAS in Kingwood that next week, so he is just going to play in the qualifier to try to earn another exemption. Good luck to you as well, Stratton has quite a few friends that will be in that field.

Do you happen to know if they have a decent yardage book? I would think they would but you never know....

I am a member and live on the course. Watched the AJGA tournament last year. There is a good yardage book they give you with every round. The course just changed hands and I think it will be for the better. No clubhouse yet. Was re-rated at 154 slope. Let me know if you want any info, I can give you the ins and outs and every detail you want on the course.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
