Launch Monitor/Fitting Questions

Well it's that time again and I am in the process of searching for a new driver and have a couple of questions regarding this process.

 

I would prefer to be fitted outdoors on a launch monitor but one of the downsides I feel would using range balls. Is this a concern?

 

I've hit on launch monitors indoors but have never felt confident because I can not see the how the ball flies and I am not sure if I truss the computer generated flight. Am I wrong to worry about this?

 

So I guess my question is which is better. To be fitted indoors using real golf balls or outdoors using range balls? I would love to have the best of both worlds (outdoors, real golf balls) but realize that could get expensive since I use ProV1x.

Yeah, this is a delema that I've faced before. In fact, last year I bought a new driver and I used both techniques and tried to add them together. I used the indoor launch monitors and just tried to get launch angle, ball speed, and ball rotation figures (with good balls) to help me narrow down to three or four drivers that worked for me. Then, once we had a demo day in the area, I went and hit all of those (with the same range balls) to help me make the final choice based on ball flight. I trusted the process and bought a Cobra X-Speed driver, even though my heart was already with the new R7 460.

Get fit ourdoors with range balls. YOU CAN'T BE FIT PROPERLY INTO A NET.

 

Think about it this way. If you optimize your results with range balls it would translate over to real balls. In other words the best driver for you with range balls will be the best for you with regular balls.

 

I completely understand your dilema and am working on a way to get both!

I have the same concerns/doubts as you about the indoor launch monitor. I think viewing ball flight, not to mention swinging in a unconfined environment, really helps in selecting a good club. As far as the cost of balls, try getting some used ProVs on Ebay. You could probably score a couple dozen used for maybe $20-30.

I'm going to go with the outdoor session. I like the idea from smarshal75 about finding some used balls. What's another $20-$30 when you are going to spend +/-$400 on a driver. You could probably get a decent reading with six or so balls if you are warmed up and swining good.
