    2017 Tournament Stats:
    • Low round: 71 (E) at Roy Kizer
    • Low 2-day: 153 (+11)
    • Low 3-day: 231 (+18)
    • Best Finish: 1 (1x), T1 (2x)
    • Birdies: 38
    • Eagles: 1
    • Tournament index: 2.66

    Synopsis:

I played well in Austin Golf Association (AGA) events, which are mostly 1-day stroke play tournaments. The caliber of play at AGA events is one tier below what you'll find at TXGA or Austin Amateur Golf (AAG) events, which draw extremely good amateurs with tourney indices in the +3 range.

When I played in top tier events in 2017, I got destroyed.

My goal for 2017 was simply to make the cut in the Austin Men's City Championship, but realistically, this goal was ruined when I tore a ligament in my right wrist on July 16.

With this stuff in mind, my tournament goals for 2018 are:
    • Win the AGA Club Championship
    • Win (outright, no ties) 4 one-day AGA events
    • Finish in the top 15 of a TXGA or AAG event (50 player minimum)
    • Post a 2-round total under 150
    • Post a 1-round score under par
    • Make the cut and finish in the top 25 of the Austin Men's City Championship
    • Finish the year with a tournament index under 1.5

Is there a question or topic here somewhere, or should we create our own?

Oh, I see it now - "pearsonified" not "pontificated."

I was reading a hybrid thread and saw your profile. What is an anti-handicap? Is that counting all rounds or the 10 worst as a different way to calcluate a handicap?

Your anti-handicap is a weighted average (95%) of the worst 10 rounds out of your last 20.

I like to track my regular index, tourney index, and anti index, as it's possible to use all 3 to get a clear picture of "who you really are."

For example, let's assume the following numbers:
    • index — 0.3
    • tourney — 2.56
    • anti — 4.7

Now let's assign a weight of 1 to the index and anti, and a weight of 2 to the tourney index:

    [0.3 + (2 * 2.56) + 4.7] ÷ 4 = 2.53

By this calculation, this player's "realistic" hcp index is 2.53.

I like this approach because in many (most?) cases, a person's basic GHIN index is somewhat of a vanity number, as most posted rounds are played on familiar courses in non-tournament conditions.

    2018 Tournament Stats:
    • 30 rounds
    • Low round: 71 (-1) at Bluebonnet Hills
    • Low 2-day: 143 (-1)
    • Low 3-day: 230 (+17)
    • Best Finish: 1 (2x), T1
    • Best Finish in a 2+ round event with a strong field (min. 20 players): T6
    • Birdies: 67
    • Eagles: 3
    • Tourney index: 2.56

    Synopsis:

Although I scored poorly in tournaments this year, I certainly started to realize some of my potential as a "birdie machine."

    Some highlights:
    • In February, I shot a 73 (+3) in the second round of a strong early-season field and posted the second-best round of the day. I beat a guy who played in the 2017 US Amateur, and on that day at least, I was the better player (granted, it was one of my best ball striking rounds ever).
    • 3 eagles in tourneys
    • I won the most skins in the first flight of the Austin Golf Association (AGA)
    • Career-best stretch of 3 consecutive tourney rounds at par or better (E, E, -1), which included 14 birdies and 1 eagle
    • I finally broke par...and it was one of the best stories of my life.
    • In 2+ round events, my par 5 scoring average was consistently at or near the very top of the field, regardless of field strength.

    Goal Status?
    • Win the AGA Club Championship — fail, did not play due to schedule conflict
    • Win (outright, no ties) 4 one-day AGA events — fail, only won 2
    • Finish in the top 15 of a TXGA or AAG event (50 player minimum) — fail, but I finished T6 out of 26 and T8 out of 44 in "good" events
    • Post a 2-round total under 150 — WIN, 143 (-1) in the Bluebonnet Cup
    • Post a 1-round score under par — WIN, 71 (-1) in the Bluebonnet Cup Round 2
    • Make the cut and finish in the top 25 of the Austin Men's City Championship — FAIL, another flaccid MC
    • Finish the year with a tournament index under 1.5 — FAIL, 2.56, plenty of birdies but too many doubles

Although I didn't really achieve the goals I set at the beginning of the year, I accomplished something I didn't even list as a goal because it seemed so preposterous—shooting under par in a 2-round tournament.

And frankly, breaking par in a single tournament round was enough of a win that I sort of don't care about the rest of my goals; it was a huge relief to finally get that monkey off my back.

With that in mind, let's set some goals for 2019...

    2019 Goals:
    • Win 4 AGA one-day events outright
    • Shoot 153 or better in all 2-round events on familiar courses
    • Make the cut in the Austin Men's City Championship
    • Have a tournament scoring average under 78
    • Average 10.5+ GIR in tournament play
    • Shoot -2 or better in any single round
