Which is the better golf trip?

Recommended Posts

compare the golf only, nothing else!
I am considering 2 different trips for early June (yeah, it's early I know but winter has set in and all I can think about is golfing). Only concerned about the golf experiences, nothing else. Drive time is about the same for each.

1. Myrtle Beach: True Blue, Caledonia, Dunes Club, Pawley's Plantation (or another course TBD)

2. Williamsburg: Royal New Kent, Kiskiak, The Crossings, and Stonehouse.

I've only played Royal New Kent and The Golden Horseshoe Gold course in the Williamsburg area...however I have friends who play there every spring. I've heard good things about Stonehouse. Royal New Kent is quite a course...it's long, it's hard, and the first time you play it, you have no idea what you can carry and what you cannot. It's a fun course that can definitely beat you up.

I've played all over the place in Myrtle Beach. I've played the Dunes, True Blue, and Caledonia...have not played Pawley's yet.

My vote goes to Myrtle Beach. True Blue and Caledonia...both AWESOME layouts, great holes, great conditions. The Dunes club, although I feel gets overrated, is a great traditional course. Conditions have been both good and fair (punched greens one time), but I'd imagine in June it will be perfect.

True Blue, Caledonia, and The Golden Horseshoe are probably my 3 favorite courses. That being said, if you like Caledonia and head to Williamsburg, I'd play the Horseshoe. The staff at the Horseshoe was the best/nicest group of people I've dealt with.

I don't think you can go wrong with either, but I've been to both, and I am going to Myrtle Beach in March and it will cost me more than Williamsburg would. I'll be playing Caledonia and True Blue...as well as a few others.

Planning a trip for June... early? Youre way behind my friend, Im working on 2010 already, ha!

Your MB trip is solid, you'll get your fix of Strantz either way. I know you want to do one last tour of the beach anyway... Still I'd say go to VA. Scout that location and report back to me so I can think about adding those to my "list".

I have already been to Pinehurst on several occasions. Pinehurst is more of a winter destination for me anyway.

The Crossings could easily me left out in favor of a different course...any suggestions besides Kingsmills?

I know that the Dunes Club is over rated, but I do like tradional, pine tree lined carolina courses. Really, there are only a handful of courses that I even want to play there, so I'll maybe only go back once or twice more. Too crowded there now. At most courses you feel as if you are herded through like cattle.

sorry..been away

there are alot of nice courses in and around Williamsburg

the "shoe" is nice but old style and a bit quirky in layout, the green course is a newer

more modern layout

a sub for the crossings could be out 64west to Gordonsville and Springcreek G.C.(bent grass

tees,fairways and greens!)

In MB i've found the more trad. courses up north( NMB and NC) more to my liking

I've never done the Williamsburg experience, but I've played all of the MB courses. I'm not a big fan of True Blue, but I played that 10 years ago and heard they made some changes. Most golfers I know love it though. I'd say it's 75% love it, 25% hate it...there's no in between.

My guess is you will probably love it.

I used to work at Caledonia...can't go wrong there. Dunes is always in tip top shape and is a great course...again, can't go wrong here. I don't think Pawley's is bad, but for the money you are spending I think you can do a lot better like the Heritage, Barefoot, Tradition, Kings North, etc.

Shouldn't be too crowded in June. The only places that are really crowded in June are the beach and the nightclubs.

Caledonia might get a little crowded, but they are usually doing about 50-75% of the business they were doing in the spring and fall and True Blue does even less business. And there's hardly anybody at Pawley's in June and the Dunes is usually never that busy to begin with.

And with the economy the way it is, I'm thinking crowding won't even be an issue.
