Has anyone ever sent a Red X to the custom shop?

Other quetions about what they can do
Hey all,
I have some questions about the Scotty Custom shop. First, has anyone sent one to the shop? I have a small ding on the top line I want to get "worked out" if possible. Also, I want to get it cut down and have weight added to it. Is that even possible?? Also, I think the shaft is slightly bent..........I'm really painting a great picture for you of my flat stick. Lastly, anyone have any idea what this might cost.

Thanks,
Jason

The only way to take out the dings would be to rebuff it, and it might take out some weight.

They can replace the weights for an extra charge.

Shaft replacement comes with sending the putter back already.

For other details, check the link above.

Hope this helps.

If you want a ding worked out by the Custom Shop it'll have to be part of the full restoration ($145). A new shaft is included with that as stated above. I believe they'll only alter an inch either direction of original (maybe it was 1/2"). Think I read that was due to balance and keeping swing weight issues, didn't really make sense to me why they wouldn't just do what the customer wants. Anyways, adding weight is an extra charge as well. Plus shipping (which is like $20-25 FedEx). You're looking at like $200 for work done by Cameron...for a putter worth barely over half that. It's really unfortunate.

You may want to consider having someone like Black Oxide Service (BOS), Kevin Colbert (Putter Plating), Tom Slighter (Slighter Golf), or LaMont Mann (MannKrafted). Going to be far cheaper, and you'll have tons more options for custom work if you'd like. If you've already considered the options outside of the Custom Shop, I appologize. If you have not and would like more information, do a search around the forums for these people and their work and/or PM me.

Hope this helps

You can also considering buying a new Red X with the specs you want. You can get something around that price or cheaper in the mint condition market.

True, I didn't even think of the buying a new one option. That's definitely a cheaper option for getting the ding in the topline worked out. Heck you could still sell yours and not lose that much I'm sure. You're still going to pull like $75+ I'd figure.

You never did mention, is this an original Red X? or the new X3/X5 model?

That is actually what I plan on doing. I didn't realize how much it might be to get a simple ding worked out. The model I have is the original Red X. Looks like you have the newer X5 model if I'm correct? I do like the original but wouldn't mind the X3 either. Thanks again!

I know it's not what this thread is about, but personally speaking I liked my original Red X better than the X3. Difference is insert or not. Between the X3 and X5 wasn't even a question for me. Something about the X5's feel is just night and day better. All in the eye of the beholder though.

For $35 (which includes shipping) Kevin Colbert (putterplating.com) can buff out the topline and re-bead blast it for you. It will look like new. You can add your own weight to the Red X with quarters. Just remove the bottom plate and add the quarters to the slot where the Cameron weight goes.

$30 to $45 will get that done by any of the places I listed above as well. Stainless steel cleanup is relatively inexpensive. Bead blasting, polishing, or a combination of both.

If you decide to add weight yourself by removing the sole plate, be very careful not to strip the screw heads. Break their seals individually and loosen a little each at a time first. I messed mine up :vava:

i'm thinking of sending mine in for a blue paintfill, does anyone know if they can do that.

...and here we go :russian_roulette:

LOL, I'm just messing with you. There's tons and tons of topics on here about that issue. Search Custom Shop or something to that matter. Check out the Scotty Cameron website (www.scottycameron.com), look under custom shop options.

To answer that question, yes they can do blue paint. Is it worth it in my opinion? Absolutely not. You have to either pay for the full restoration ($145), or purchase a set of Custom Shop headcover ($72) and grip ($37) before they'll honor any custom fill requests. Even then it's limited to 2 colors, and they choose where they go. BTW, those prices were just out of memory, could be off.

Pay for shipping and give me $5, I'll give it some custom paintfill :drinks:

  • 2 weeks later...

Yes, they do add weight. I had them add 10 grams to my Red X5...330 grams was too light for me as well. The next round I played with the 340 grams, I shot a 34 (probably just a coincidence). Either way, I believe Scotty should up the weight in the Red X's like he did with the Studio Selects. That way you wouldn't have to send your putter to the Custom Shop; 35"/340g and 34"/350g would be stock. As far as paintfill, do it yourself! I learned this lesson the hard way...the price of the CS headcover & grip are ridiculous,

you dont ever want to try and sand or polish good size dents out, that can turn ugly in a quick hurry. i tig torch will swell the dents right out so you dont lose weight.
