Time for a new ball?

Hi all, due to a change in my working I’ve been playing 3 times a week for the last 6 months. Got my handicap down from 19 to 8 during this time, admittedly 60% of this improvement is from 60 yards in but the long game has come on as well.

Anyway, previously I’ve been happy playing any old 2 piece, recently Srixon Distance, as I’m only a medium hitter (230 yards off tee) and wanted the extra yards and due to a low ball flight (relatively) with irons I have tended to pitch my approach’s short of the green and let them run up to the flag so wasn’t bothered about spin, chipping you get used to a 2-piece and allow for run out so that never bothered me either.

Anyway, today got annoyed, my 2 best shots of the day were an 8-iron from 140 which pitched 3 feet from the flag and a 7 iron from 150 which pitched 5 feet from the flag, on both occasions the ball ran out 20 yards off the back of the green. Greens were medium neither firm nor soft, ball flight was high, for me, so I was expecting both shots to have pulled up within 10-15 feet of the pitch mark.

I am moving away from run up approaches to flying straight onto the green as my ball flight is getting much better/higher.

So I think I’m ready for higher spinning ball.

I’m after hop and stop performance from 8 iron down, more than that would be nice but not essential, don’t want to spend more than 20 quid a dozen, needs to be durable enough to last 36 holes, I don’t want to lose much if any distance.

My driver swing speed is 95mph.

Thinking Gamer V2, Bridgestone E5, Wilson FG tour, Nike Vapor?

Any suggestions…………….

If you want to stay in the Srixon family try all three of these.

TriSpeed - Not a high spin ball but enough to hold some greens. Very good distance, softer feel off the putter.

TriSpeed Tour - same characteristics as the TriSpeed with more spin on approach shots. (This may be the ball for you).

Z-Star - I love this ball but it requires exacting contact and compression to get reliable distance and spin. I find if the contact is off, my miss is toe high, it tends to balloon with more side spin than I would like and I lose 7 yards or so. Definitely a ball strikers ball. Long off the driver, great spin around the greens.

i'm glad you are improving, and it's possible that you might find a higher spinning ball more to your liking. however, technique is still an issue; on medium greens, even basic two-piece balls shouldn't run out 20 yds like that--that's 60 ft.

I hit my 8 iron 140 yards, took a nice divot and the ball went high and at its target. What technique am i missing out on? That green was elevated dont know if that would have a bearing on anything?

if you want to stay srixon i would grab the z-star, but if you dont mind trying other companys grab some callaway tour i(s) or nike one tour. Those all have great spin and feel

I like Srixon's but will try anything. Show me where I can get Z-Star's, Nike One's or Callaway tour's for 20 quid a dozen and my search is over.............

I think it really is a personal thing and you should buy a number of sleeves of different balls before buying a dozen of anything. There are some good suggestions for balls here, but I have hated some balls that other people swear by. Nothing wrong playing last years premium balls, now on discount. Only prob is if you love 'em, you had better stock up! Trying is the best policy. I often swap a ball with one of my playing partners to get a feel for what he is playing.

I have been playing the Callaway i(x). They are on sale here in Canada for 29-99 a dozen and I like 'em. I played with a single capper last week and he was playing the Bridgestone e6 and it was stopping well. He says that he tried the 330 and 330S , but liked this ball better.

FTR, I played a round several years ago and on the first tee hit my drive OB. Decided to take out a prov1 that I had picked up, had never tried these balls before, and shot the round of my life. On the 18th I realized that I had taken the wrong ball out of the bag and had actually been hitting a Titleist DT Distance! Go figure..............
