Swing Weight Help

Hey guys,

 

I have a set of JPX 900 tours with a KBS C-Taper Lite 110 Stiff. I'm wondering what I could do to maybe bring the swing weight up a bit but not have it just feel head heavy. My old set was MP-32's with a DG300 and I've been thinking I want something that has a little bit closer to that kind of feeling at least on the short irons. I'm by no means a club expert or a fitter so I have no idea if this is even possible or how I could do it, but I'd appreciate your help since I know many of you are what I'm not.

 

Also I have a swing speed of ~106 on a driver with a pretty aggressive transition and a tendency to swing too hard, so if you think that I should benefit from these kinds of changes or if I should stick to what I have that insight is also more than welcome.

You have a few choices.

 

- pick club and buy lead tape. Go to the range and add tape, little at a time, low and center on iron until you find a good spot/feel/results.

- go to fitter/mechanic and pretty much do the same thing with their help

- then you can add tip weights [remove shafts first] to replicate your results, add powder down bore of shaft or go with a heavier or lighter grip

 

First recommendation is the best/most important/least expensive. Have fun

Wouldn't this make the club feel head heavy though? I like a more even weight distribution being able to feel some in my hands as well, not just on the end.

Sounds like you want to add heft, not swingweight. Higher swingweight measurement is more weight in the head (or less in the other end). A heavier shaft might do it, or adding headweight AND grip-end weight with counterbalancing tip weights. A visit to a clubfitter may be in order.

Swingweight IS how the club head feels in your hands. That’s the definition. If you want a heavier overall club you need to reshaft with heavier shafts.

 

What Is probably bothering you is the lighter overall static weight of the club, not the swingweight. Some people don’t adjust well to lighter shafts.

 

I can’t stand any iron shaft under 115 grams. Drive me nutty completely regardless of the swingweight.

 

I politely disagree with adding head weight combined with grip weight and perhaps weight plugs under the grip. That simply does not FEEL like a heavier shaft where the extra 20 grams or so is distributed over the whole shaft.
