Modifying Swing for R. Leg Injury

Gents,

 

I am having a rough go. My Mom passed away 5 days ago. Acute Leukemia, taken 13 days after hitting the ICU .. sadly only 74. She was a tough little Dane.

 

Golf has clearly become secondary

 

On top of this awful tragedy, I have horrific sciatica in my right arse but it's in my right leg that is worse ... it's now weakened. FWIW, I've previously had two microdiskectomies and a laminectomy to relieve left side sciatica .. L4-L5 ... back in 2004.

 

Anyways, it would be great to get some help/ideas/suggestions to read up on to serve as a distraction

 

Right now I've gone to the range twice to try and "de-stress" and the following seems to be working

 

- Narrower stance

- pre-load weight on LS. Almost stack and tilt with weight in my left butt and more flex in left knee

- much flatter/shallower hand path

- wider and shorter swing

 

I've lost some power (1/2 a club) but man can I hit it straight with this move. I feel like Kuch because I'm so much less upright with my hands and arms

You might look at A.J. Bonar’s videos (on YouTube). Especially if your physical condition leaves you less of a choice, it may be a particularly appealing approach to you.

Out of curiosity, did you have much physical therapy before deciding on surgery?

I had a ton of rehab before surgery. I couldn't stand for 5 mins. Lots of people can't sit ... I was the opposite

 

That said I wish I hadn't done it. it was a miracle cure right away ... then got worse for 2 years before it finally got better

My pleasure. Sounds rough.

 

Something you might find helpful, that would be relatively innocuous, is Feldenkrais. They’re movement patterns that can help with various physical issues. They are at the potential ‘waste of time’ end of the risk spectrum.

 

Here’s an example dealing sciatic pain. If you want to skip all the New Agey silly ****, she finally gets to the point around the 5:45 mark.

Much shallower thru the ball.

 

Harder to hook it and hitting fades is far easier

 

Leg almost normal now and full power back

 

Only negative is the shallow hand path is not good (so far) around the greens
