Help and advice on new driver please!

Hello everyone!

Got a chance to hit the Titleist 905r at work today. Not to keen on the saucepan looks, but it's soooooooo forgiving! Basically decided i'm gonna get one, but not sure on the spec? Unfortunately the soonest the Titleist factory can do a fitting is the 20th June! and i don't have any access to a launch monitor!

So i'm hoping if i can give you as much info as posable, then some of you might be able to help me out?!?!

 

My current driver is a Titleist 905s 7.5* with a Grafalloy Blue 'X'. I play off 2 hcp, my swing is fairly quick but pretty smooth. I'm 5'11'' and 175 pounds. Swing speed with a 6 iron is 105mph (100% sure) Swing speed with a driver 120-125mph (70% sure, can't quite remember?) Driver launch angle 10* (95% sure) spin rate with driver 2600rpm (70% sure) Ball speed with driver today was 175 average, but i've been in bed the past 3 days with a chest infection and still felling well rough now! So i'd imagine this will be quite a bit below what i'd normally be at!

The figures i'm not 100% sure of are from memory, from the fitting i had at the Callaway factory last year. I did have a print out some where, but can't find it! They told be to stick with the Titleist as it would suit better than any ft3 combo they could offer!

I put quite a bit of lead tape on the driver about a month ago (head/counter balance) and that has helped me hit it ALOT straighter, so been thinking about going for a heavier shaft? Hit a Diamana Blueboard 83 recently, liked the feel and thought this might be an option?

 

Basically looking for ideas on loft and shaft and anything else that may be relevent! Look forward to hearing from you all!

Thats pretty much what out area rep said before i went for the fitting............. then got told down at Callaway that the Titleist suited me better! Was surprised by this, but more surprised by how honest the Callaway guy was! Havn't got the opti-fit system in the uk yet and this was last year i went down.

That's cool. Glad the Cally guys were straight up with you then. I know the FT-3 isn't for everyone but I am still surprised they couldn't find anything to help you out. If I hadn't just gotten fitted by the Cally Tour Van for my drivers I would surely be looking into the Opti-Fit system. Seems very efficient. I'm sure other manufacturer's will soon follow. The guys in the Tour Van were also very cool and loved talking golf.

Hit the Srixon 506. I was at a demo day in Myrtle Beach hosted by golf digest and it was the talk of the demo day. The big thing was most people didnt even know Srixon made woods and then they hit it and loved it. I have a 9.5 myself, it was enough to get me off a ten year binge on Callaway drivers :golfer:

Thanks Dan, i've tried the 506 but set on getting the Titleist!

Just totally confused! Do i go 7.5* or 8.5* and what shaft?

Was hoping with the wealth of knowlage on this board, someone might be able to advise me. Otherwise i'm gonna end up guessing and ordering blind.

Hi Ben,

 

Hard to say but I would say to stick with 7.5 on the R if you prefer a lower launch. I would probably recommend sticking with the Graffalloy Blue but the Diamana is a good choice to keep the spin rate down. However, your spin and launch would probably go up vs. the S.

 

I have a 10.5 905T with 65 V2 and my 9.5 V2 75 905R launches slightly lower even with the lower center of gravity and higher spin rate. I am also getting a flatter trajectory vs the T. Haven't hit the S so I can't comment on the difference there.
