I have had the same problem. The one tip that helped me was to make my practice more like my round. Try not to just swing the same club over and over again. Hit a variety of shots and change targets. Also change up your lie, meaning don't give yourself the perfect lie every time, hit from a divot, hit downhill, uphill, sidehill. It will be good for your whole game.

You know, I've been having the opposite problem lately. I don't have time for much golf, but I go to the range 4 or 5 days a week. I hit the ball like crap. I don't remember when I've been so inconsistent. When I do get to play, however, I hit it great. I'm hitting nearly every fairway and 14 or 15 greens. If I could get my putting going, I could post a decent number.

+1 - Yup, it's easy to grab a club, start pounding balls, and get in a groove. "justodd" is right, change it up, make your range time worth something. When you're pounding balls for 10 minutes on the range, depending what you normally shoot, you hit about the same number of full shots as you would on the entire front nine. Pick targets, change clubs, go putt, go hit some more.

Same. I hate hitting off turf...

If you are talking from an accuracy standpoint I would ask how certain are you that your good shots on the range are all that good? I have a buddy who complains ALWAYS that he doesn't take it from the range to the course well. I tell him that his driver on the range is the same weak push he hits on the course, but the width of the range masks it. In essence, pick very specific targets and work on hitting them with in a few yards of the line you have picked.

If you are talking more in terms of ballstriking, I.E. Nice and clean strikes on the range, then fat and thins on the course, much of that is the different lies, sidehill, downhill, rough etc. This is especially true if you are hitting off of mats on the range, that can really hide a variety of misses because there is no turf/club interaction. A fat shot on the range mat will often bounce right into the ball and result in a short yet acceptable looking shot, But on the course you are going to pay for it. If you are hitting off grass tees, try a variety of lie conditions as others have suggested.

Practice will ALWAYS pay off. Keep at it, you will get it.
