WRX 3-Club Tournament

It's early season and I thought this might be a fun thing to try when the course is pretty empty. There have been threads here before about 3-club tourneys, but I've actually never played in one, and think this would be a great little practice session before the season really gets going!

 

Here's the idea:

 

1) Go play your home course/course of your choosing with a pre-selected 3 clubs

2) Post your course slope/rating

3) Post your handicap

4) Post your 3-club score and the 3 clubs you used

 

Compare and active/passive brag to your heart's delight about your results!!

 

Who's in?? I'd suggest a deadline of Sunday, April 13th (Master's Sunday) for "turning in your score," but I'm open to this being an ongoing thread if there is enough interest.

if i get out friday i might have to try this if i find a course cheap enough. figure since its before i have to start posting legit scores it'd be a fun time to do it. a league i played in a few years back id do the same thing but would go out with one club and see how well i could play. things the best i ever shot was two over (for 10 holes) with a 7 iron. i got really good with my seven iron that week and needless to say it was my best day of putting ever

does the putter count as a club? Great idea btw, I've always wanted to try the "tin cup" 7 iron only round too

yes it does..... or at least that's how we play... I putt with my 58*

Exactly. I'm planning to use driver, 8i, 60* and putt with the 60.

im thinking 3 hybrid, 7 iron, 58* depending on length of the course and how wet it is, score posted tomorrow afternoon

Alright, I guess it's fitting that I post the first score. This will be full of excuses, just fair warning

So I wasn't going to play today, as the high was only supposed to be 48* and it was 10-15 mph wind and raining, but after thinking about it for a while, I decided there would probably be no one on the course and it would be a lot easier to just cruise around doing the 3-club thing, so I went for it. It was definitely colder weather than I normally would play in, and there was a 4 hole stretch from 10-14 where I really couldn't feel my hands, and another couple hole stretch where it was hailing/freezing rain, but with that said here are my results!

1) Played my home course, a Johnny Miller design out in the West Valley area of Salt Lake City called Stonebridge Golf Club.
2) There are 27 holes, but the combo I played is the easiest, at 72.8/136, 7095 yards
3) Current hcp is +1.3, but that is all from last summer. I've only played 4 rounds this year so far and I would guess I'm sitting right at 0 right now.
4) Chose driver, 8 iron, and 60* wedge for my 3 clubs, putting with the 60*. SCORE = 81

Round breakdown:
FW: 8/14 (right about average for me. Only 2 holes that I normally don't hit driver on, so fairly equitable)
GIR: 5/18 (avg. is just over 12....this hurt!)
Putts: 32 (avg. is 31....should I be embarrassed?? Or just start putting with my 60* all the time?)
Scrambling: 4/13 (avg. is 48%....normally I'm much closer to the hole though and generally in better positions)
Proximity to hole: 60.1' (avg is 33' so I obviously suck at half-shots!)

Overall, despite the weather, I had a lot of fun trying this out! I played in 2.5 hours, which was great. The toughest part was trying to control half shots with the 8 iron and a couple par 4s that I just couldn't reach with driver/8 iron with the wind and temps the way they were today. I had quite a few "short game" shots where I was left with over 30 yards to the hole and that seemed to make the biggest difference in terms of short game scrambling ability and scoring.

The 2 highlights for me were the 1st hole and the 18th hole.

1st hole - left myself short-sided in a bunker, hit a nice shot that bounced once in the fringe and rolled out to 20 feet. Honestly didn't think I could do a whole lot better....then I sank the putt with the bellied 60*! Nice par to start out

18th hole - Driver, 8 iron, 3/4 8 iron, again short sided....have a sidehill, downhill chip to a tight pin....bounce it twice in the rough/fringe area and it comes out perfectly, rolling right at the hole. Somehow the ball catches the left edge of the hole as it's dying and DOESN'T go in...still not sure how, as it stopped 4" behind the hole. Would have been my only birdie of the day, but no luck.
