JPX 825 Pro to PP3003 or AF 503?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about getting a second set of irons and currently pretty happy with the JPX Pros. Which would be the more similar of the two, the PP-3003 or the AF 503, in terms of forgiveness, accuracy and turf interaction? Maybe the Miura CB 501 instead of the PP-3003?

I've only hit the AF 702 and while they felt nice, I didn't like the larger sole.

Thanks

I just got a set of PP-3003 and I really like them. The top lines and soles are not that big. FYI, I am a 15 handicap.

I used to game the JPX 800 Pro . I have not tried the AF 503 . I play the Miura Passing Point 9003 Straight Neck & love em !
The CB 501 is very blade like , you really need to very consistent to be hitting them well , kinda similar abilities to MP 64 comes to mind .
The PP 9003 have a nice top line & sole .
Demo them , you won't be disappointed .

PP is definitely closer to 825pro. 503 is very much more like a GI iron. CB-501 is another player iron but if you were to ask me which is most like the 825pro, I'd say PP9003.

Since you already play 825 Pro well, I will suggest you try Miura cb501 or Epon Af-302. They are not that difficult to hit like other blade like cavity back, they are quite forgiving especially the Epon.

If you are going for pp9003, I will suggest the straight neck model. The regular pp9003 has too much offset imo.

Are the PP9003 considered a step toward more GI irons or are they more of a lateral move from the 825 Pros? I'm looking at the Straight Necks as I don't want more offset than I currently have. I'm going to book a Miura fitting soon, but I haven't found one with both the PP-9003 and the AF-503.

I'm getting the idea that the Epon 503s are a much bigger step than the PP-9003.

Thanks for the input.

Ooops... Kevlin replied before I sent this. I've got to try those 302s with the right shaft. Fitters are limited here in Epon.

PP9003 are a step towards GI only relative to the Miura line. Compared to everyone else, I think they're still a players iron and a lateral move from the 825Pro (I might even say that the PP9003 is still a touch harder to hit).

503 is definitely a big step (I moved to 503 from 9003). The 302 is closer to the 825 in playability but my opinion is that the 825pro feel is distinctly different from 302. The 825pro feels thinner and firmer while the 302 feels like it has more mass behind it.

I had the chance to hit the 503 and 9003 today off of a mat. Back to back, the Epons felt much nicer, but I didn't like seeing so much cavity which I'm not used to.It felt like I was hitting everything fat (which could be as I probably swing different off of them since hurting my wrists on mats a few months ago), it might b the lie angle too as my Mizunos are 3º up. The regular 9003 had too much offset, but they didn't have a demo of the Straight Necks. I was offered a pretty good deal on a lightly used set of the 503s, which tempted me, but I think I need to go back and focus on the 9003 and guess about the playability of the Straight Necks. In comparison, my JPX 825 Pros don't feel too bad, not Epon soft, but not a world away from the Miuras, although I suspect the shaft has some effect on that. I play GS 95s in my Mizunos, the Epons had N.S. Pro Wrap Techs and the Miuras had graphite. I'll be moving to KBS Tour 90 or TT XP 95 in whichever irons I buy.

Any word on the release date of the 1957 cavity backs? I feel like I'm not a consistent enough ball striker for the 302s, but I didn't think I could game my current irons when I got them, but were the right choice at the time.

The Epon 503 is as easy an iron to hit as anything I have ever tried. The PP 9003, not so much. Not nearly as forgiving. I came from a set of Fourteen TC 530FG irons and I must say, these Epons are similar in feel but longer and straighter. To me both feel better than the Miura's. As for the JPX Pro, for me they are harder to hit and last in feel. Having said that, I'm a graphite player and all 3 had different shafts when I owned them. The Epons, I shafted with Tour AD shafts, the best of the 3. The others had stock graphite. Epon has me won over. Easily

I ended up getting a used set of the PP-9003. I'm already thinking I should've tried the Epon 302 or the Miura CB 501. I think I underestimated myself as to my ball striking. My misses are left due to not getting my hips cleared, barring the occasional "WTF". The upside is that I'll put the two shafts I'm considering in the 6 and 7 and get to play the 9003 on the course and really evaluate. If I don't like them, put the original shafts in them and get most of my money back.

While the softer feel of Epons is cool and different, a more solid but soft feel is probably what I really like. I've been paying attention to the "302 or 501" thread and have hit the USDM Mizuno 59 and 64 pretty well. I guess I have to just get more comfortable with the idea of playing a smaller head "for real" as opposed to just checking out clubs in a store off of a mat. I'm lucky that I can play my JPX Pros until I get this really settled.

I wouldn't call the PP-9003 a GI iron - they are still demanding yet friendly for a MIura, and the Straight Necks take out most arguments against it -- too much offset for some people. Good luck finding the shaft that fits you.
