Standard iron shaft lengths vs old school standard

Wondering about those of us want to play old school standard length shafts properly fitted as measured from wrist to ground.

 

Only speaking of G.I. irons as I have no experience with blades. But I have noticed they gradually get longer per club by more than .5" I know why and don't wish this to get into the jacked lofts and longer shafts discussion.

 

My concern is a player will usually play better with a properly fit cub including length. So If I butt trim say a burner iron 1/2" from standard, I am fine until I get to the 6 5 4 as they are spaced like 5/8" vs the standard 4/8" (.5)

 

So in this configuration by the time you bring them all to standard, you are swaying close to .5 between the 6 and 4. And since the length changes the lie you will most likely be toe down on the 4.

 

Also by this reasoning, by the time you get to the 4, you are close to swinging a 3 length club. The hardest clubs to hit are the long irons.

 

I have all my irons figured out for the most part, still playing with freq, but I can not get my long irons to work in conjunction with the others.

 

So I pulled my 4 and 5 irons and added 4 and 5 rescues. My 6 iron is still in progress and hope to get it within 12 yards of the 5 rescue. 10 yards would be even better, but the rescue is hot.

I'm 6ft 6in and have always played 1" over old standard and 2 deg up as that was my original Ping Fitting. I think that the problem now is that there is no "Standard" Each manufacturer use what they think is currently in vogue. I would also offer that 1/8" is not critical as in custom fitted mass produced clubs I have seen that much and more as a variation within the factory fitted set.

If you want to get you own clubs back to "Old Standard" I would start with a definate known club length and then work on 1/4" steps per club up and down from the known, as that was the old variation per club.

You could also take some advice from a non affiliated club maker.
