Long time beginner, taking it more seriously this coming year

Hello WRX!

 

I'm 39, picked up the game when I was 19. I got dragged out with some friends and borrowed my dad's old Macgregor Tommy Armour blades, circa 197X, with woods made of actual wood. I graduated to a set of Ping ISI-s that I got fitted for a couple years later in 1996. I played a few rounds a year casually until my grandfather picked the game back up and got a job at a 9 hole executive course, and asked me and my uncle to join him for golf and breakfast on Sundays when he gets to play. (he's 87 now, had 2 knee replacements so he can continue to golf!). The company is good too.

 

I've been doing that for 6 years now but never need anything longer than an 8 iron.. mostly wedges, and with postage stamp greens, no putts longer than 20 feet. Well, I am re gripping my clubs finally, bought a driver, 3 wood, and 3 hybrid on ebay, and would like to get out to some big boy courses. The executive is a par 29 and I have been 1 and 2 over several times, usually 4 or 5 over though. I'm very comfortable now with everything from 165 and in (8 iron is about 165) but pulling out the longer clubs scares the heck out of me! I have no official handicap obviously.. and I know I should grab a lesson or two before next season.

 

In my searches for knowledge and reviews, this site kept popping up and I decided to sign up. I may or may not post a lot but I would like to contribute when and where I can.. and ask questions. Thanks for having me!

Hey SplashShot. Nice intro. I was a long time beginner like you about 10 years ago. I took it up seriously and joined here too. You are coming on board at a good time. There are a ton of knowledgeable folks here and excellent writers. I look forward to reading your posts.

Welcome Aboard! Never too late too start enjoying this game [again]. I started when i was 11, played thru college, had a
20+ yr hiatus away from the game and started playing in my late 40s about a year ago. Like riding a bike it all comes back! Best of

I checked that site out. Thanks for the tip. Wife wants to pick up the game and so does my son, who is turning 6. They have a really nice selection on used clubs.. and also on more golf clothes for me
