Taking the plunge

Recommended Posts

Been playing persimmon driver and 2 wood all season so far. I'm going to take the plunge and add my 1967 Hogan's as well. Curious here ? What issues did you have with the older irons on the course for the first time. How did the older wedges handle? Lower or higher flights?

Just from walking off my range shots, I can estimate I'm a good club and half shorter with my Hogan's. Looks like i will also have to play for more run off on approach shots. Today's equipment really sits well; However, not the case with the Hogans. I am excited and will pick a less than demanding course to see how it goes. I might be very surprised of the results

Any suggestions or stories from first round with older irons?

The driver and 2 wood persimmon are incredible control. Literally hitting beautiful low running draws with both . And long

In my experience as long as your comfortable with the general specs, you won't have a problem. Distances often only really vary due to loft differences and shorter club lengths. If you are concerned about spin on aproaches etc, refreshing the faces by means of a light sand blasting can make a world of difference. Remember the clubs are over 50 years old and probably have never been blasted since they left the factory.
Plenty of folk get hung up on the sharp leading edges and low bounce, don't let that put you off them, try them out , see how the go , you'll find that it's not as bad as every one makes out.

As far as the wedges go, I really can't comment as I generally carry the same wedges all the time. I can't confidently throw another wedge in the bag unless it's undergone some serious back yard testing.

As fluffy was saying, you aren't really a club and a half shorter. It is just that today's 7 iron has the loft and length specs of your '67 5 iron. Just figure out which of your old Hogans to hit from 150 yards, and go from there.

Drivers: Titleist 915D2 9.5* Aldila Rogue 60-3.8-S
Titleist TS2 Tensei AV55 S flex

Irons: Titleist 718AP1 5-GW2
Wedges: Vokey SM6 , 56-10S, 60-08M
Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport 2.5 35"

After a lot of range practice I took out the clubs for a full 18. Everything is pre 1970 putter/ hogan irons / 5 wood and driver. It really really was a challenge but manageable. My irons were one club shorter from current clubs and I hit. The current wedges make the game so easy, but the old hogan wedge teaches you control and precision. Played a course under 6500 yards and broke 80 with 2 birdies. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will do this again my next round. Really suggest others do this at least once; really had a very spiritual feel to it with every shot I hit

I started using vintage gear on a reg basis last year (wanted to get feedback on my swing) have never regretted it since. My home course is 6600 yds im a bunter with modern gear have no issues using old gear. Hogan 73 apex are my gamer irons and I quite often switch drivers between a Mac MT, Hogan speed slot and a Mac Nicklaus murfield ( I modified the loft on the Murfield also new shaft)

Your right-it does have a spiritual feel to it and that's part of the attraction for me...a round at sunrise as a single with my vintage gear is very rewarding.

enjoy thnx for sharing

I don't use anything but Wilson Dynapowered / Dynapower, or Hogan PC / Medallion. I'm getting better.

With more modules I'm sure I'll hit farther, which will get me on (or closer) to GIR. Then I'll be par material.

But I'm focusing on straightening my shots. Then I'll want to start shaping shots. Only then will I really care about distance increases.

After all, I can play from senior tees.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
