Looking for a few thoughts/tips - Cant keep my spine angle through impact

Recommended Posts

I have a problem at impact staying down and through the ball. most of the time the shot is still decent, though this video shows the extreme of a failed shot.

Thoughts?

For reference, I was trying to hit a low, stinger shot under that tree, the hole was far more left than the ball went :)

Most folks just put it up on YouTube and post the link here. There's no rule that says that's what you HAVE to do but I think you might get more responses that way. Your call. And it is pretty locked down as is. Your call on all this but I doubt you're likely to hear much without going the more traditional youtube link route.

You are standing up during the down swing.

Bandaid? just accept the flaw and play closer to the ball by addressing the ball more towards the heel of the club. How much? Shouldn't be more than an about an inch - you are compensating for the change in spine angle back at impact.

Permanent fix? Hmm, there's a couple of reasons you get taller through impact, none of which are something I could explain properly over just one chat. Shoot me a message if you wanna talk it over.

PM sent.

i find I have more of these issues the lower I try and hit the ball (knock downs/punch/stinger)

Also it tends to happen as I get later into the round so I am just blaming age and flexibility :)

Here is a side view, not clearing the hips as much as I thought.

FWIW - I like that motion - A LOT.

Its interesting to watch. Your move in the takeaway sort of represents a lateral shift of the hands, handle, shaft, upper body (the whole smash) but you do so in a way that is forever loading into your trail side without swaying the lower body. That's a nice hip rotation going back. From the top down you preserve that whole structure of your lead arm and shaft coming down than get that trail elbow working down in front of you.

You avoid that pronounced shoulder protraction so many fight where the chin drops down into the shoulder turn as the lead shoulder rounds over and seems stuck to the side of the jaw. Nice free and full unhinging of the wrists.,

As you pointed out it might be nice if there was a fraction more rotation of the hips to clear... but we are talking fractionally - not something on a massive level. Maybe something along these lines would get you that tiny bit of motion needed to clear... but again that's and enviable golf swing on so many levels. Very nice!

My problem is that something causes me to get stuck and start pushing shots, Im sure some of it is getting tired through out the round, I think I just need to get more big muscles in the swing and take bit more of the smaller ones (hands) out of it.

For what its worth here are a few more shots from that round

Ya know how we all tend to setup with the shoulders a little open? With the trail hand being lower on the handle there just is that natural tendency to setup with a alignment little conflict. One way of correcting for it is to ever-so-slightly bend the trail elbow at address - which from dead DTL allows a fraction of the lead forearm to show above the trail arm and the shoulders suddenly line right up.

Another sort of kick-the-tires idea would be to set the lead elbow at address so that it points down to the lead hip bone a little more than having it start off more or less pointing down-the-line. What this does for me personally, is that it sets the two lead forearm bones up with one right straight above the other almost like they are stacked up vertically. Since the lead forearm ends up rotating 90 degrees during the backswing... the net effect of this little setup 'trick' is that the lead arm is pre-set to rotate that top bone (I think its called the radius) a perfect 90 degrees by the time that arm makes it to the top. Its the same motion as holding that hand out in front of you by itself with the back of the hand to the target and thumb pointing up. By the time we get to the top that palm is facing downward - a 90 degree rotation of the lead forearm. Be sort of "presetting" that arm at address it just gets easier (for me) to roll it about 45 degrees for a half-swing, or just let it roll to its natural 90 degrees for full swing. The clubface rotation back down and through seems to smooth out from that awareness.... or at least for me it does.,.

In your case the lease elbow is set in a way where that rotation works well for you.... but was wondering if perhaps it could work a little easier and automatically if you experimented a bit with lead arm rotation, how to sort of pre-set it, etc. The reason I even bring it up is after noticing the shoulder alignment thing my eye went to your lead elbow at setup and how there is just a bit of a cupped lead wrist going back. Thought something along the lines of lead arm setup and rotation might just give you a little added boost to go with the shoulder-alignment comment.

If this stuff wrecks a good swing like yours - I sure hope you don't end up cussing me - LOL. That's too good of a motion to mess with. Just was hoping to find a little tweak to give you a focus that just MAYBE could help out a touch.
