Why am I Slicing Drives

Recommended Posts

I have long history with slicing my drives. In the last few weeks I've taken lessons and improved my swing path greatly and my movement. I'm definitely slicing less, but I still slice too much for my liking. In the videos I'm pretty happy with my swing path, but can't figure out why I'm inconsistent with slice (also, occasional hook). Please help!

Irons are great. No slice.

THANK YOU!

Don't worry so much about "the slice" but work on improving your swing. Your backswing doesn't look too bad to me but I agree with BStone1, get your left shoulder pointing down towards the ball more and maintain your spine angle. When you first bring the club down on your downswing it's way off plane and the rest of your swing is working to correct that. Right after you make contact with the ball, your club head goes left instead of continuing towards the target. Your hands are very close to your body on the DS.

Take a few more lessons to fix your swing flaws.

AW,

There are (for right now at least) only two things I would focus on if it were me personally. Keep in mind I can be dead wrong my friend so what I'm about to share with you would I think make for a great discussion topic with your swing coach the next time you see him.

1. I would be asking him to help me get the right elbow working down and in front of the right hip and belly in the downswing so that the hands and handle can more naturally and fully unhinge.... one of the sort of ways to get that old "effortless power" thing up and running inside your motion.

2. I'd like you to watch anyone of your swings and count "one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two.... Count from the time the club starts to swing back to the top. Then, start counting again from the start of your downswing all the way to the finish when the club stops moving and is at a dead-stop.

What you're going to discover with #2 is a little disconnect in your rhythm. Normally the count from start to the top is very close to timing from start of DS to dead-stop completion of the swing's finish. So - you might say the BS is too slow.,.. but I don't think so personally. You move the clubhead back in a way the head sort of covers the hands and handle about halfway back (which is really good) AND you have a tiny little mini-pause at finish of the backswing (also excellent). BUT there is a bit of a rush to the finish line, Since we are watching a slow mo video it is safe to say you aren't far from being in good shape rhythm-wise. There is just enough of a difference to ask that swing coach about helping you establish an nice balanced back-and-through tempo.

That (for now) is what I would do were it me - get the right elbow working a little better in the downswing and shoot for just a slight refinement in the DS tempo so that it matches up a little better with the BS timing.

Good luck!

Club is stuck way behind. On the downswing, your trailing foot is off the ground before you even return the shaft to 9 o'clock. Arms need to catch up, because you are basically spinning out and flipping. Face is wide open at the top.
