Iron/wood graphite shafts - soft tips for R or SR flex?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Somehow, though I've been around WRX for years, I never really ventured into this subform until now. What a mistake that has been! Some great information and discussion here.

I hit a 6 iron around 150 yards and a driver around 210 carry, I believe. I don't have any Trackman numbers, though; I'm sorry. I have steel stiff flex shafts in my Wishon irons right now, a Fubuki stiff in my driver, NVS stiff in my 14* and 21.5* woods, and a Wishon black stiff in my 16.5*, simply because of cost as the clubs were used and cheaper to buy.

I find that I really like the feel of the NVS in my two fairway woods, but even those clubs launch relatively low for me. I am looking for info for both a .335 wood shaft and .370 graphite iron shaft that may help me get the ball in the air more. Fleabay has the NV 85's in senior flex and regular, I think, but I'm assuming those will still launch too low. Am I right in that assumption? I assume I need a softer tip like the NVS.

I'm on a budget right now as a college student. I may not play much golf the next two years of school, so I could probably afford Recoils by then if anyone suggests those, but really, I would like options that are cheaper. I'm not sure if I belong in regular flex or senior, but I'm open to either and have played all flexes except for ladies' flex in the past. I hit my senior flex Jetspeeds and Speedblades fairly well but sold them when an unexpected medical bill came up.

Thanks in advance!

Ryan

For players with slower swing speeds, any contribution to the launch angle from the shafts would be quite small and only if the player has a very late release. What that means is that for the purpose of finding and selecting a shaft, finding one that feels good is really the dominant selection criteria. If the launch is still low with a shaft that feels good, changing the head loft is really the only effective method from the standpoint of the equipment. If you are seeing the low launch with all your fairways at the different lofts, then the core problem is most likely a swing issue and not an equipment problem. You'd be much better off saving the money for a lesson (or take the free route and post a video of your swing over in the instruction forum and ask for advice there).
