Pocatello, Idaho 2-man Best ball. Any WRXer's playing?

Weekend before 4th of July

I am heading back north to play the Annual 2-Man Best Ball at Highland GC, in Pocatello, Idaho. It is a super tournament that has been going on for a long, long time. This will be the 25th anniversary of the first time I got to play, so it has been around well over 30 years. At one time, it was the largest tournament in the state, next to the Idaho Open. The guys that play are some of the best, friendliest people in the game of golf.
It has been very interesting, and somewhat tough to handle, to watch the player's ages increase as time has gone on. I played it first at age 15 and was one of the "WOW, that kid can really hit the ball" kids. Now, age and swingthoughts have greatly diminished my abilities and there is always a new crop of "WOW" kids, every year. Some of the older gentlemen that made the tournament great, have passed away over the years. I guess it is just the way that life works, but it is a subtle reminder that we all age at the same rate.
If you are a WRX'er and are planning on playing, send a PM or post here and perhaps we can get together and swap stories or such at the calcutta on Saturday evening. My dad has been the auctioneer about 90% of the time, over the past 25 years, so the calcutta is always a part of my weekend there.
Hope to get some replies, the WRXers have become like a 2nd family as my internet addiction grows.

Boy that brings back some memories. I was born and raised in northern Utah and we used to go play the tournament at the Highlands, a 3 day event at Twin Falls and usually played in the Idaho Open.

 

I'd love to go back and play them again.

Remember when the Highland's tournament took years to get invited to? If you missed a year, you could kiss getting back in for a long time. Now, since the county took over the whole shootin' match, it isn't near as tuff. The atmosphere is a little different, now. I remember when the calcutta would take in over $10K. Now, it is doing good to get 1/3 of that. Times change, I guess.

Where are you located, now? My brother doesn't have a full time partner on his team, but he isn't in your hdcp range, either. If you ever think you may be up for playing in the 2-man, keep my WRX ID handy.

Great to hear from someone who knows the tournament of which I speak.

Wow I haven't thought about the Highlands in years. I played a lot of golf there during my days in pharmacy school at Idaho State. As I remember there are really interesting places you can hit the ball in those foothills that result in some potential dangerous side hill lies. Swing the club - tip over on your nose. Fun fun course tho and I have vague recollections of the tournament of which you speak. But then my memory of those years isn't all that clear anymore. Enjoy yourself and maybe, if time permits in an upcoming year you'll hear from me.

golfluvzme, I'm now living just outside Orlando. Yeh that tourny used to be a little tuff. My partner was the son of a pro in Salt Lake so we never had trouble getting in.

I wonder if they are still doing the one in Twin Falls. It was even more fun than the Highlands one. 2 man teams. Played best ball, alternate shot and scramble over 3 days. And the afternoon of the first day they had a 9 hole shoot out.

Those lies still exist, the tip-over stuff. They did do some great work on the 15th hole, the one with the cow's face green. I remember having a 3-foot first putt from above the hole and a 30-foot second putt after skimming by the edge of the cup on my first attempt. A few years ago they really rebuilt that green and made it a whole lot more level. It is still a tuff par, but not as evil as it once was.

My father and I look forward to this weekend, the following year as we walk off the last hole on Sunday afternoon.

Keep it in mind and I'll be here a year from now.
