Forward press...add loft?

I have a newport teryllium scotty cameron. i putt terribly with it when i don't forward press. but when i do it's the complete opposite. i was just wondering if i should add loft to the putter or not. if you are familiar with the putter, i usually press my hands forward enough so i can see the white dots on the back of the putter. Putting is all about personal preference mate and at the end of the day, if it works stick with it.

 

A newport/anser shaped putter isn't necessarily the ideal type of putter to incorporate a forward press but again, if you're comfortable with it then there's no point changing.

 

The only reason you may want to add loft is if you feel the ball is skidding off the putter face. Do you think that's a problem or are you putting o.k?

I think the scotty's generally come w/ 3-4* of loft, so if you have a major forward press, you may need somethin closer to 7*, as Utley recommends. If I can remember the last time I used a TeI3, seeing teh white dots is quite a forward press. Honestly, there's literally NO way to tell if you have enough loft without a real fitting. Skidding is virtually invisible to the naked eye, but if you absolutely can't get to a fitting ,you could try putting on some early morning dew.

Utley recommends around 5 or 5.5 degrees. However, it all depends on what angle the face is at at impact. Without seeing your stroke, or ideally capturing it in slow motion video, it is impossible to tell whether you need more loft or whether your current loft is perfect.

Using a forward press de-lofts the putter (It removes loft at impact). So if you want to replicate those results without a forward press get a couple of degrees of loft bent out.

Sorry, you're right. I htink it's Phil Mickelson that has 7 degrees on his (or maybe it was Utley's own stats?).

I have always forward pressed. When I was fitted for my putter the fitter recommended 4º of loft. It works very well for me.

Thanks to everyone. I've never actually been fitted for any of my clubs except my irons and standard was fine on those anyway. but that's beside the point. I'm sixteen, and my dad doesn't really buy into all of the fitting stuff b/c he's a bit old school. But he's a four handicap and i'm a ten, so he owns me until i can get it down haha. But if you guys really think i should get fitted, then i'll really try to pursue that. I've never really researched or looked into it, but would getting fitted really matter that much? by the way, who exactly is Utley?

My Newport was bent by Utley during my first lesson with him. He gave me five degrees of loft and a lie angle of 68 degrees. I think that is close to his own sp0ecs and close to what he gives most ordinary sized folks.
