Trish rags on Charley

Any of you have any thoughts about Trish Johnson's Charley Hull comments?

 

"Korda earned her 10th victory and second of this 2024 season at the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship to reclaim the World No. 1 spot. Meanwhile, Hull finished tied for 10th and had a shot to win, but wasn’t able to get over that hump.

Despite Hull being the No. 7 ranked player in the world, eight-time Solheim Cup participant and fellow Englishwoman Trish Johnson dropped the mic on Hull during a SkySports golf 

“I’m probably her harshest critic because I know how good she is,” Johnson said. “She doesn’t win anywhere near enough for her talent, and she doesn’t get involved enough.”

“The thing with Charley is that you’re never going to change her. I read something the other day that said how much she loves the game, and it’s her love of the game [that costs her]. She’s never going to change. She’s just going to go for every pin.”

There is something to be said for being aggressive. But clearly Johnson has the perception that Hull’s aggression is what is holding her back from becoming a superstar in women’s golf.

She then dropped the hammer that pretty much everyone might agree with.

“If you put Charley Hull against Nelly Korda, then I’m picking Nelly every single day of the week,” Johnson said."

With the shade from a fellow countrywomen, id have thunk it'd aim more towards ditching the Intl Crown and not her win total/style of play.

that was my first thought when i saw the title too... I’m never going to root for the hull/hall tandem as a result of that actually (cruel, sure, but hey, everyone has their opinion)

Speaking of Charley, I was kinda shocked to see this on Emma Talley’s IG story

 

 

Not in some kind of harsh/judgy way….just surprised.  Is this a known thing about Charley that I just was unaware of?

Charley is Charley. Likes playing and not practicing. Rather hang with mates than grind at the range. Plays blades and fires at pins. 

 

Yeah, she certainly should have won more, but she's earned close to $8 million on the LPGA, nevermind her LET earnings and endorsements, playing a game she loves while still having a life.

I don't read that as throwing shade at all. I read that as someone being completely honest for once. All I hear is, if Charley played smarter, she'd have more wins. Charley knows this is true.

Yeah she lit up on a tee box in i think the aramco event recently and the camera lingered. Was bit shocked to see it, spec as she portrays such a healthy freak on her socials. 🤔

I think Trish is spot on re Charley. She doesn't always make smart decisions on the course or maybe even with her equipment. Charging Charley blows rounds with her aggression, but sure is fun to watch her hunt pins.

 

However, I don't think Charley gives a d*mn, she's living her dream, has made $8m LPGAT career prizemoney so far, seems to love her travel, food and other social activities. Many admire her.

 

Difficult to criticise if you think of it that way.

One of the main stalwarts and flag bearers for women's golf in Europe? Sky sports commentator, tournament winner, Solheim cup player...  have I made my point yet. 😂

Think I've noticed in past year or so since watching alot more LPGA and with demise of men's game is that it still needs characters.. there are to many who just blend in and aren't someone you remember as its all played by the book? Charley just does her thing and there's always room for people like her in the game, lets have more. Plus I do think money wasn't an issue before she started he career so in some ways it's just a free roll and enables that more laid bk attitude. I think she will win this year. 🏆

Well for want of putting it better I don't think her family were short of a few bob? So she probably would have had other opportunities available if golf didn't work out and no pressure of earning.

OK haven't really delved into it... but I thought Charley came from a working class background, i.e. contributing to her drive & focus on making it (i.e. "no Plan B").

Hmm, you may be right, but I have caught glimpses of her family home on IG, tennis courts and all? Maybe there's alot of money in plastering? Maybe won the lottery? Guess it don't matter now for her, she probably makes as much of course as on it. 🤔
