Equipment for NEW but GOOD Golfers

I am new to the sport, but have definitely got "The Bug". This past summer was my first on the course. I am pretty athletic and come from a long family of "scratch" golfers, so I picked it up pretty quickly. I have been playing on borrowed clubs and am currently using a pair of hand-me-downs (stiff flex/blades/non-oversized) which are difficult to hit. I want to purchase new clubs this winter before next season, but don't want to spend a ton of money? I do however want a good pair of sticks that my ability will grow into. Any suggestions?

A set of irons such as the Mizuno MX-23, which are somewhat forgiving, while still giving you room to grow sounds good. (Other options include: Callaway X-18 / X-18 Pro Series, Titleist 804, Nakashima NX-1, Taylor Made LT / OS, Ping i5 / G5)

In terms of wedges, whichever looks best to you at address is a good choice.

The past few generations of drivers have gotten closer and closer together, so you could go back a generation (or more) and save a considerable about of money. With new equipment such as the Nike SQ coming out, the Ignite is available at a reduced price (and is still a fine driver in its own right). Similarly, the Titleist 983 series and the Taylor Made r500 series (510TP, 540XD, 580XD) can be had for reasonably inexpensive prices. I would recommend you demo a number of drivers and see which one fits you best.

Best of luck,

-Thomas

If you don't want to spend a ton of money, I would suggest buying used or close-outs. Here's a set I think would run very nicely and not break the bank:

Mizuno MP001 460 $130

Mizuno T-Zoid $70

MacGregor 1025CM $400

Nike SV 56 $80

Nike SV 60 $80

Guerin Rife $200

All brand new prices from tgw and edwin watts....you can buy them even cheaper elsewhere.

I find the inclusion of the Rife hilarious. It's the single most expensive club and 150% more than anything other than the driver!

I would suggest buying a Ping for the putter. Everyone's first "serious" putter should be a <$100 Ping before getting into the hell that is Cameron fanhood.

I know, but the putter should be the single most expensive club IMO, it will be used the most!

I agree.

But since you just pick up the game even though you're pretty good, are you absolutely sure that Guerin Rife is exactly what you want? I mean you may make several changes to your putting stroke along the way and then you may find more selections that you've never tried out.

Anyway, if you believe Guerin Rife is the one, go for it.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
