Hogan 73' Apex random find total $22

So walking into a thrift store yesterday to find a Halloween costume for work contest and didn't go looking for clubs. After looking for the costume I looked around for 10 mins and found the '73 Apex in a bin. I grabbed them so quick people where looking at me to one I said well they are hogans so what is a guy to do. He laughed, he knew! They are 3-9 no EQ serial matching so I took them to my guy right after to get the lofts and lies done. I play always 4-pw so I just had him bend them to those specs for the 3-9 that I wanted. Of course the set was all over the map. Last night got them home after work and couldn't wait so I got them re-shafted with a set of Apex 4 from a set pulled out of '99 Apex I had. The heads are dinged up a bit and some light wear patterns towards the toe but consistent somebody was a decent player. They had a bit of light rust spots so I used a sos pad and it came right off. The grooves have a bit of rust spots still in them but they will go away after a round and a couple range sessions. Paint fill the sole to original as it was all worn off and fresh semi gloss black on the Ben hogan script on the backs.

I will be playing them tomorrow as I'm off from work and will have a range session on Friday afternoon before the weekend

I will report back

Here is a photo of the new boys last night getting them home before I did any work.

Very cool.

I picked up some BH grinds and I'm eye about 4 other sets right now. The 72, The redline 88s (I believe) and the 99 CBs, I was stalking some Personal Japan models today, but they zoomed over my budget real fast.

Any Hogan experts care to recommend a shaft for the BH grinds? They've got some sort of gold, boron in them now. And I don't seem that lasting more than a day.

great score-what was wrong with the shafts that were in them? the 73 apex is hard to beat. you can always find an eq later on.

my thoughts exactly on the eq later on. I will even go back in a day or so and see if the eq "shows" up at the thrift store.

The shafts where only apex 3 (too soft for me), too short for me, and the grips where unusable with chunks flaking off and they where rusted and pitted quite bad actually. lol other then that they where clean as a whistle! lol

the shafts I had already gripped and in like new condition so a no brainier for me. I have dealt with the pins before.

understood -apex 3 shafts. good that you have pin experience and know whats involved. i found a bh grind E or pc E makes an acceptable sub for the 73 apex set. sim enough in look and desighn to pass for a sub. hopefully some one or yourself will locate a 73-78 apex wedge someday. i havnt mustered up the courage to tackel the hogan pins yet myself

Interesting thanks ideally I would god the EQ. I can't get intomorrow to the thrift store but I will be going Friday to see if it turned up

The pins can be intimidating for sure. Big factor is what you want to do with them meaning keep them to reuse on another set of shafts or simply discard. If the shafts are rotten like in my case with these I just cut them off at the ferrules and drill out the pins pop the shaft and go very easy to do. When reshafted after the epoxy sets I go back to the pin holes and just fill the outside with some epoxy that dries grey. You don't notice it very much unless you look. If you have more tools and experience you could always weld a drop in there to fill it in

Great find! I love my old '74 Apex blades, best design after the Precisions!

I'm using these bad mothers tomorrow! Can't wait the paint fill has been completed and ferrules turned finished just before the first pitch of the World Series tonight

Here they are in the bag ready for today. It was a cold day only 6degrees Celsius (pei Canada) I like the ball flight and no distance problems going to 3-9 bent to 4-E. the only thing I did notice was the irons felt a bit clicky then my other hogans not a bad thing just a different feel. I loved the setup position at address very clean and inspires confidence

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
