Anyone build their own practice net?

I'm thinking of building one in my backyard, and was wondering if anyoner here has ever constructed their own. Pictures would be great.

My dad and I are also going to build one. The thing is finding thick netting with small gaps. I bought a net and I could hit balls straight through it with my driver (not good), so we plan on building one in the near future. Shouldn't be too hard as long as you can get a decent frame and decent place to put the thing so that the netting doesn't get ruined - we're thinking in our shed down the back (it's huge).

I just throw an old quilt (rug works too) over the clothesline. It's quick, it's cheap, and you never have to worry about replacing the netting.

 

If you really want to go with a net I recommend staying away from any type polymer based netting as the sun will break it down in no time. A quality hemp-based fish net will last forever.

I looked up some info the other day concerning this. I think you would probably need 3/4" (no larger) mesh nylon netting, preferabaly more than 125 lbs strenth. Don't get the weak stuff.

Looks pretty simple. The net shown on the above link is a simple design. You could go as far as building a cage as well.

I have access to an abundant amount of netting, just haven't done the frame yet, not sure if I have room.

 

A good friend of mine owns/operates one of the largest paintball facilities in the area, and the netting used for the paintball fields is pretty much indesctructable.

The nets seem to be coated with something that comes off on the balls and then leaves an impact mark on the club. It easily comes off with a quick wipe.

I built a 9' by 9' cage. I saw pictures online of cages and decided to build my own. I was lucky enough to get the netting from my dad's friend's company which makes tennis nets. He had some old golf netting left over from a previous job. I bought 10', 1 1/2" pvc pipes from Menard's. Home Depot has them too. The tricky part is getting the corners. I had to order them from a plumbing supply place online. The corners are called Side Outlet 90's. You'll need cable ties to attach the netting together and to the pvc. Because the cage is so big, you need to take the wind into account. I bought some tent stakes and rope to keep the net from blowing over. My mat is from Fiberbuilt. One note though; I have learned from experience to have a second net in the hitting area which is loose to avoid balls ricocheting back. It's definitely worth having in the backyard as I can hit balls and work on ball contact anytime.

If you had to buy the netting and pvc, glue, stakes, etc.. it might be just as cheap to get one of the ones on ebay. Some even come with a mat. You are looking at sub 100 bucks.

I built a hitting bay in one of the spare rooms in my basement. I built the frame myself and bought the netting at a local golf shop. I use the heavy weight black netting that is used in some of the higher end nets. I found that the frames are make the ready made kits so expensive so I made my own. Of course I had to take it a little further and cover the floor in turf and padding so I can chip, drive or hit irons.

 

It is nice to be able to hit indoors when it is rainy and cold outside. Do a little research and you may be able to find some netting at a good price. Good luck.

I picked up one of these Here a couple years ago. It folds into a 4ft circle. It's no driving range, but i've never hit a ball through it, and it's portable.
