Modern Golf Fitting

Hey Golfwrx,

 

I just had my first fitting at Modern Golf in Toronto Canada. I wanted to share my review of this facility and my experiences. Firstly I think as others have stated going to modern golf is not simply a trip to a regular golf store but more a pilgrimage to golf equipment Mecca and a trip all gear nuts need to make in their life.

 

The facility is outstanding and the staff could not have been nicer. When you first walk in you are greeted by friendly staff and great retail shop full of hard to find and exotic branded clubs, bags and tour putters. Very cool experience. They provide you with a nice change area ( could have used a few more seats in there) but still a nice touch considering March in Canada you are not dressed at all for golf. While you are doing that your clubs are whisked away to the blueprinted station where every aspect is checked out. I was in for a driver fitting so that is what was blueprinted.

 

I then meet my fitter John, who was a ball of energy and you could see his passion for the game and what he does bursting out of him. He was very engaging and ready to go to work. I was informed that my current gamer which was 915D3 with a rouge 110MSI 60G in S-flex was playing closer to 10 degrees not the 9 it was currently set at, which made sense to me as i was seeing some ballooning in my shots. Also John very interested in what my game was and what my goals where. I thought this was awesome as he was making some mental notes and kept circling back to those goals through out the fitting to make sure both him and I were on the same page with the desired results and to not get to distance focused.

I am fairly long with 278 track man carry with my 915 but my main goal was to hit more fairways. I wanted a reliable performer and if there was more length as a result perfect.

 

After a nice warm up, we got a base line with my current clubs and then the fun began. This is the what i wanted to stress more than the results of the fitting but a review of the facility and experience. John rushed out and came back with a murders row of shafts and heads. The cool think that they do is the universal adapters so every shaft and every head is comparable and no combo is off the table. While we focused heavily on numbers and results there was also some good dialog about feel as well. I clearly had a performance for more active shafts and we quickly got down to 2 heads. The 917D2 and the Epic sub-zero. I have a fairly negative AOA -2 degrees and a high swing at 112 MPH which created some challenges.. At no point during the process did i feel rushed and john was engaged the whole time! this was important because at this point i really put john through the ringer in terms of finding the right shaft! John to his credit stayed true to our goals of finding a reliable gamer and not just trying to max out numbers. The epic was showing significantly better ball-speed on miss hits and we landed on the GD ad-di 6X shaft at 45 length. before we wrapped up he ran out and came in almost giddy with the new Atmos blue 6X that they had just gotten in and was build the night before, i was literally the first to hit it. While it turned out be a great shaft ( super smooth) it couldn't beat the GD. But i think this just show the passion they have for getting it right and leaving no stone upturned. We already had a great solution but he wanted to try just one last option just encase it was maybe better!

 

The final build was 9.0 epic sub zero with a GD- ad-di 6 xflex at 45 inch. could not be happier. I averaged 289 carry and most importantly i had a better playable miss with alot less spin and no more ballooning.

 

Lastly and i think this is the most important part. their was some time before the next fitting and i was in no rush to leave golf mecca John circled back to some comments i made at the beginning about my game. I mentioned tend to miss left with my wedges on full and half swings. He said we have some time so lets look at those wedges. after a handful of swings he determined they needed to be a little flatter lie angle and bend them 2 degrees flat for me which help right away! I thought this was a really nice touch as it was a simple fix and even though it was not part of the what i was their for it left me feeling great about the experience.

 

I settled up for my order for the new driver and parted with john as he was off to his next appointment! before leaving he said if i had some time and wanted to roll some putts and test out their HUGE array of custom, hard to find and tour putters to knock my self out. It was a treat for a huge putter ho like myself.

 

I think anyone in the area owes it to them selves to check out Modern Golf i left feeling like every person in that place truly gave a *$#! about making me feel the most confident as possible in my game and my equipment!

Sounds like an awesome experience!

 

With Montana being such a sparse state, I've always wanted to go to a place like this and go through the full gambit of golf equipment.

 

Buying and selling to try and fit yourself is a very expensive hobby :)

Thanks a lot, I couldn't agree more the winters are long here and it certainly becomes very expense to try a lot of gear just to keep the juice going. While the cost of the build is very expense i think it financially prudent in the long run because their was literally nothing at all i did try that i was interested in.
