Hogan Apex shaft comparison

hello all

 

Wondering if anyone knows if the Apex 3 shafts from 70s would have much difference from the

Apex 3 shaft of the 80s (as shown in pics) strictly in terms of flex. Im trying both out the Apex 3 from

late 80s early 90s has very good feel to them.

I have Apex 3 from the 70's which I have always loved. I also have some Apex 4's from the 90's which I don't love.

If I remember correctly, the Apex shaft was a proprietary lighter weight steel and step pattern for the company. 3 was regular flex, 4 = stiff, 5 = X stiff. They had other shafts like the Apex D, which was the original TT Dynamic shaft (heavier and different step pattern and probably other Apex variations that I don't recall.

I played the Apex 4 back from the time they were introduced and all through the 1970's. They were great feeling shafts. I hit some Hogan irons in the '80's and '90's that had Apex shafts but they didn't feel the same. So I switched from Hogan irons to Mizuno with S-300's. Sorry I can't explain why the difference but there was a definite difference.

I got a Hogan Apex 6 iron to test the Apex 3 shaft against some others. How would I tell whether I got a 70's edition or an 80's or 90's?

I have the 70s shaft in my driver and love it. No experience with the 90s version

Comparing the old AMF shafts in my Apex IIs and PCs to '99 Apexes, the step pattern is exactly the same and as far as I can make out, the weight remained the same. To me, insofar as I can make out hitting different heads with different grips, they're basically the same shaft.

What about an Apex Edge #4 shaft? I have a set of these shafts and the step pattern is way different than the earlier Apex 4's.

Even lighter weight to complement heavier game improvement heads, but allegedly designed to perform like a straight apex so a somewhat soft tip or low bend point.

Yes. The step pattern is the same even going back to when the "Apex" shaft was named "Legend"..........and regardless of the manufacturer. I bought 3 NOS sets of Apex 4s manufactured by True Temper. I used one set and found no difference between those and the 80s or 70s Apex 4s I've gamed.

 

I may still have some Legends lying around that I can take a pic next to a 70s and 90s Apex and Precision FM 6.0 (on a set of c.1980 NIB Ram Tour Grinds)- best shaft ever made IMO.

 

Pre 1996 TT Dynalite R300 & 1996 onwards Royal Precision FCM 5.5 I believe are the recommended similar replacement shafts where the confusion comes in.

 

The "Royal" in Royal Precision was Royal Hogan.
