Wilson 8802 "84"

Recommended Posts

Found this Wilson Original 8802 at goodwill. 3 bucks out of the door.

Can anyone shed some light on what the "84" designation is on the sole?

Also, the putter seems to have an odd dull bronze/greenish patina to it, along with a stepless, non fluted shaft. The grip is an old GO Grip rite. Are any of those standard features for this model?

probably 34 not 84. should measure 34 inches.

Nice putter!

JB

Good call! It does seem to read 34 and it measures out at 34", give or take 1/4 of an inch.

The head material and stepless shaft still confuse me though.

Did W/S do the 8802 in materials other than steel? I've seen some of the other 88xx models in bronze, but never the 8802.

That's one of the remakes as the original didn't have "Original" stamped into it.

Is it magnetic? A strong pull means its carbon. A weak pull means its some kind of higher carbon content stainless. No pull at all and its either high quality stainless (doubtful) or a copper alloy or something similar.

Just tested and had a Pretty strong pull with various magnets. Sounds like it's probably carbon steel.

Thanks for the help!

I have un unmarked 8802 i found. Just stamped 8802 on center

Maybe ill inspect the 2

Dynamic shaft with silk screening and lamkin grip

I have some 18:8 stainless which is mildly or moderately magnetic

Some "stainless steel" goudie irons which are pretty highly magnetic cept for the irons i buffed out to a high gloss

They now have no attraction to a magnet at all

The heads get pretty hot when buffing

No problem. Im not sure when they started casting/milling them from SS but the old stuff is always carbon as far as my experience. Some of the "old dogs" can probably give you a better idea of that timeline.

Heres the thing with stainless; you can "add" carbon to it by introducing something carbon to it i.e. cleaning with a brush made from a ferrous material. You can also with a real good and I mean REAL good cleaning/buffing/polish remove that "added" carbon. As a pipefitter by trade anytime we use a stainless pipe the first thing we do is see if its magnetic. If it is, its cheap stainless and we dont care as much. If it is quality stainless, as in not even the faintest magnetic pull, we take every precaution to not introduce carbon to it. Grinding wheels, wire wheels, cutting blades, even certain non-marring tools are rated for stainless work. Believe me, it will rust, it will corrode, and it will fail somewhere down the line. Not a big fan of it at all. Its a cheaper way to make golf clubs as far as Im concerned.
