Associate Mens Club - Overall Format Change

Looking for some advice from those of you who play in a club:

 

We play 1 tournament per month. March - November. 9 tournaments.

 

We have about 55 members. Around 20 - 24 in each tournament.

 

Each tournament consists of an A Flight (12 and under) and a B flight (13 and over). Each tournament we pay out the top 3 in each flight (net score)

 

In addition, we have two long drive comps & 2 Par 3 comps. We also pay out low gross and low net

 

$5 skins game

 

Lasty, we have a 2 man best ball with your riding partner for the day.

 

For the season, we have a points based system to recognizing our player of the year in both flights. Essentially, you get 40 points for 1st, 30 points for 2nd, and 20 points for 3rd. 5 points is rewarded to the "also-rans"

 

Our issue: We used to have a nice balance of A and B flight players, but now B flight outnumbers the A flight in tournnaments (3 to 1 or 2 to 1). Our club president is considering a single fight for next year and a payout of the top 6 spaces (same we pay out right now as 3 per flight). I think this would unfairly punish the A flight players who seem to shoot a pretty consistent net score of around or over par. Meanwhile, the B flight players are all over the board. Not common for a B player to shoot an 67 net one tournament an an 81 net the next.

 

What format or changes would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

This is interesting ! I have been wanting to have a league but have no idea of how to start ! Can you comment on the good and not so good things in the start and with all pit falls etc.

Maybe suggest redefining the minimum handicap for the A-flight (15?). Then maybe try to get some more lower handicaps to join so the A-flight can go back to 12 or less.

 

I think the punishment for the lower handicaps is that when a much higher handicap player would have a good day then the lower handicap would have no chance. In the end I think the lower handicaps would win more often but it gets very painful at times IMO.

 

Another way might be to have a dynamic cut-off. The idea would be the cut-off for the A-flight would be moved to the point where about half the players are in the A-Flight and half in the B-flight. It would change from month to month depending on the participants.
