Pretty Much A Jumble Of Information On Wedge Play

Have no idea what I'm ever gonna do with a wedge

I have just kinda taken information from everywhere about my pitch and chip game. I really have no idea what to ever do. I guess I have some questions.

1. Why do you open your left foot when playing any wedge. I open my foot more and more to the higher degree wedge i use. Should I open my feet on a full wedge shot?

2. Where should I play the ball on shots? On a full shot i usually play it in the center of my stance. The shorter the shot or swing I usually play it more and more towards the backfoot. Is this right?

3. How do I open a club for a flop shot? I just can't figure it out. Whenever I get into a tight lie im always in trouble. I usually turn the toe back and aim a little left of my target, open my foot, and just swing a little left of where i actually want the ball to go.

Thanks a ton. I carry three cg10's 52.56, and 60 plus a pitching wedge so equipment is not my problem.

As far as wedges go, I wouldnt listen to anybody. Watson always used a 56 and he was great around the green. Mickelson/woods use different wedges all the time, they are awesome too. so who knows.

 

As far as full shots, you probably should open a little - just because the swing is so short and you need help getting through it. I also play half wedges farther back in the stance. so you are right there.

 

As far as flop shots, I would not fool with that from a tight lie. That shot needs to be perfect. I think if you use a 60* and just put the ball somewhere in the middle with a square face, you could probably pop it up high enough. Flops are really specialty shots, I hate them because they usually make things worse. But if you want to do it, the face needs to be like a bunker shot, (I dont usually open much more than normal - and I take a normal swing- but then again - I suck at it)...

I'd take a short game lesson (or a series.) You'll get set up correctly and learn the basic shots. Then when you practice, you'll spend your time ingraining the right moves rather than spending your time trying to reinvent the wheel.

Sounds like you have it pretty well correct to me. I do the same thing. For a flop I weaken my grip and swing like a V, totally open stance and ball forward in stance. I use a lot of body rotation on the shot. I hardly ever use it on the course. I think like twice this year. I can get it up high and quick but it's really a shot that has it's place and that's when all other options are exhausted.
