Palmer Axiom Persimmon Woods

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of playing the Palmer Axiom Persimmon Woods.

I also was hoping to find out when they were available for sale and if anyone has a copy of an original advert or catalog scanned for the brand.

Also what was the Densitzed process used on Palmer Woods, my guess was that it was similar to the Macgregor Oil hardening process.

Many thanks for any assistance.

Gary

The Axiom was introduced in 1986. Arnold Palmer played the irons in the 1985 Skins Game. He played well with them and had NBC announcer Bob Goalby drooling over them and saying he was going to get himself a set.

Densitizing was a process ProGroup licensed from a Kentucky based persimmon manufacturer named Middleground. The heads were actually somehow impregnated with epoxy. It was said that all sanding had to be done prior to this process as the heads were too hard to sand after the process.

It's rare to see Peerless woods in the thrifts, but I have seen a few. Some were as beaten up on the heel or toe as any others that hadn't had the epoxy treatment. I can't speak as to neck cracks. They were guaranteed for five years at one point, unheard of for OEM persimmon.

I played Peerless woods for a time and thought they were great. I have never owned an Axiom persimmon wood.

Great information thanks very much. I am in the process of refurbishing some Peerless woods and have just bought some Axiom ones looking forward to giving them both a knock in the spring.

The "offset" in the woods created a weak point, and most of them didn't last too long.

Think about all the new technology, where the driver faces as well as iron faces are caving in.

Those new-fangles clubs are relatively cheap to warranty. A solid block of wood, with a specifically designed weak point...??? Not so much.

But, these woods did give way to the Cobra offset drivers that promoted their ability to eliminate a slice.

I remember all of the Pro-Group reps back in those days touting the "densitized" process. They passed out tons of free tees when they visited pro shops. The tees had been "densitized" too. You couldn't break the damn things. It was a pretty good marketing idea. I see the above advertisement mentions those tees too. That was their "hook". I really like the Palmer drivers from that era. They have held up really well.

But as Augie said, all the Axiom persimmons were offset. Combine that with the over the top moves that most slicers who needed the offset had, and it was a recipe for disaster. One good "neck shot" and you could bust one in half. The later Axiom metal woods were pretty good though as were the irons.

  • 3 months later...

I played the Axiom irons as a staff member when they came out. I played the Peerless woods. The Accles & Pollock (sic?) shafts were like telephone poles. It was a great staff program with all the stuff you got as well as a chance to meet Mr. Palmer. One of my prized possessions is an old Duckster navy windbreaker with "Arnold Palmer (signature) Staff Member logo on the chest. I don't think we ever sold a set of the Axiom woods. It seemed to me Lynx also had an offset driver/fairways at that time.
