Iron Offset vs. Minimal Offset

I am relatively new to GolfWRX. What a great site!

Having been an equipment devotee for years I wonder if some of my fellow WRXers can help me understand the amount of offset on irons.

Mind you, I am no expert...I play off an 8, not having played much for years until recently. I understand the swing, and am a good (not great!) ballstriker.

Why do club manufacturers say it is easier to work the ball with blades, or irons with minimal offset? I am able to set up to work the ball with blades, or more forgiving irons. Have played Hogan Apex blades primarily, and Mizuno MP14's. Not playing much anymore, I am in the market to switch to Hogan Apex Edge Pro's, or Mizuno MP30's, MX23's etc...

I would appreciate any "technical understanding" of what offset is supposed to do.

Basically, it gives you a little more time (very little though) to get the club face square at impact.

I don't really understand all the fascination on all of these forums with no offset. I've played blades forever, some with offset, some without. I also have some forged cavities with atleast 2-3 mm of offset and all that does for me is force my hands to be a little more forward in my setup. This probably helps a lot of people by keeping the clubhead behind you hands at impact forcing a downward strike. If your clubface is square at impact, it doesn't matter if there is 10 inches of offset, your ball will go straight. If offset really affects your game, its probably more of a swing issue than a club issue. Matt

Very well written, Matt. I agree totally with your thoughts, and appreciate your time. I've never totally understood this fascination/tech talk about offset. Sometimes I get too technical with my swing, then I know it's time to just go back to more of a "feel it" swing. Guess offset of the club face just doesn't affect my brain! I like your point about getting the hands a little more in front of the ball to promote a downward strike...if I'd only do that EVERY TIME!! THX
