You Know What Your Supposed to do...

...but don't do it.
Anyone have this problem? You execute the perfect practice swing, yet when you get over the ball to execute your shot it's very different.

I have a tendency to overswing when hitting a ball, but not my practice swings. When I do execute the shot properly it's great, but when I don't it's not. Duh.

Any suggestions to such a simple question?

I have had this problem forever and for me it's due to having 15 bandaids for 15 swingflaws needed to make the shot. One falls off and I miss the shot. I played my first round today since getting a lesson. By the back 9, simplicity. Didn't even take a practice swing on a lot of shots. "Back to target and pull", that's it. I make sure I'm not too close to the ball, squat up and down a little when I waggle to make sure my knees are bent and that's about it. The pro got my grip tweaked, my plane was pretty good but now a little more upright and getting pretty consistantly square at the top. So that's my recommendation, schedule a lesson and get the swing tweaked. Believe me, I was apprehensive but it payed dividends immediately. I hit a lot of poor shots, missed putts and still shot 13 strokes better than the last time I played the course I did today.

I know what I'm doing wrong...just have trouble executing it. Ingrained habits that I have to break. :-)

1. Know what you have to change

2. Understand why you need to make the change, otherwise you'll just be a "dabbler" that quickly moves on to something else

3. Understand how to make the change (the specific motion, drills, etc.)

4. Be commited to the change and practice the change while taking video as often as possible

5. Review the video during the practice session so that you know you are doing it correctly

6. Practice the changes often enough and over time they will become ingrained into you subconscious motion

7. Continue to practice these changes after you believe they are ingrained or you'll be likely to drift back to your natural tendencies. Even the best players in the world do this, just go to a PGA practice tee some time (Vijay with his headcover under his left armpit, Verplank with the strap around his arms, using alignment sticks, etc.)

Use video as often as possible. Practice swings are always "perfect" because there is no outcome and no consequences. In reality, they are far from perfect in terms of the motion that must be executed.

Good advice. Thank you. Played from the forward tees today...so I wouldn't feel tempted to kill the ball and just focus on rythym, tempo and not overswinging. I shot a 72. I may do this more often until the move becomes ingrained.
