Leadbetter backswing drill???

Wall at you butt to get you on steeper plane

Just read a David Leadbetter drill for helping get on right plane in backswing and the right elbow position at top. Says to set up with a wall behind you with your butt just against it. Then take swings to top avoiding wall. at top the right elbow should just touch wall.

Will this not make the swing just too steep. Been checking pro swings (with irons) on web and most would clatter into the wall if they did this drill

Am trying to steepen my plane a lot so perhaps a good thing for me to do in sense of practice extreme to see a little change in swing (move a mile to change a inch).

What do you guys think of this drill and positions it is promoting??

That seems like a strange drill.

 

But like you said, maybe it's overdone intentionally.

 

Personally, I'd stay away from it. It's just too easy to groove bad habits.

 

You'll get out to the course and find you have a case of the sh*%ks!

Seems to me this might work for a two-plane swing but not for a one-plane swing. Any thoughts?

club shaft will get really steep on the way back and seems like it will make it really hard to get the club into a powerful connected position at the top.

This Drill is great for two reasons Mikey

1/ It helps if you are taking the club to far to the inside on the takeaway,( put's the club in a good position when the club shaft is parrallel to the ground).

2/Works really well if you are laid off at the top or really flat.

It will help if you have any of these faults.

It will help you get a steeper plane and more uppright.

Also this wall drill works really well if when you are taking the club away to much with your hips ( to much body movements)

Try keeping the hips still to where the club reaches the Parrallel position and from there just take the club up the wall.

One of my students was hitting the wall by the time his left arm had reached the the eight o'clock position. After a few swings against the wall he really felt a much better and steeper swing.

The wall drill is great for a full backswing 2 plane swing or a inside takaway one or two planer.

Please note

It will give you a much steeper plane and is more a takaway and backswing drill only.

Any other drills for getting more upright? I'm 6' 5" and swing practically around my waist (well, maybe not that extreme). Still, trying to get more upright to take advantage of my size.

Hi TJW

The above Leadbetter drill will help to get the club much more upright.

Try to keep your hips Quiet on the first part of your takeaway,

The main thing is to keep a good amount of flex in the right knee.

Also a great drill is to stand on the side of a hill and pretend to have a ball bellow your feet and practice swinging. It will feel really strange at first., It is very hard to swing flat from that position. After a while your swing will feel much more upright.

I think this is a great drill. I was flipping my hands (rolling the wrists) as my initial take-away move. This made my backswing way to inside and gave me an "over the top" motion which ended up as a slice/pull outside to inside impact. Doing this drill a few thousand (literally) times really made my backswing a lot better.
