Trevor Immelman's golf swing

I think he has a great swing going on, and would like to hear what some of you swing gurus/instructors think of it.

I like his swing a lot. Very simple. Lots of rotation. I'd like his arms to be a little more passive after impact maybe. But I love his nice and compact iron swing.

He's definitely top 5 of active players in terms of quality of his golf swing in my book based on seeing his swing realtime and looking at a few of his on youtube. I did go to the Buick Open this year with my camcorder looking for him but no luck, which was a huge disappointment as I was really wanting to get some video of it myself. He really has great control, perfectly on plane, quiet footwork, great rotation, releases left beautifully (Cp release, especially with irons) and fully releases, not a bit of hold-on in his motion. Decent power for a guy his size as well. Too bad he's not a very good putter.

On his downswing, am I correct to think that he is rotating hard with his shoulders as well as his hips?

Is it the position at the top of his backswing that allows him to make that strong turn through without a "hip bump" or "dropping" of the club?

Yes and Yes. These are some of the key elements that I like so much in his swing. He sets himself up for a very simple golf swing. Good observations on your part.

I don't understand why he (or anyone) would want to restrict hip rotation on the backswing. Is this something to strive for? Is it a good idea to point the right toe in?

Generally, I agree that it's not a good idea to consciously restrict BS hip rotation. Maybe one player out of a thousand should do this IMO. I believe that the best starting point for most players is to have the back foot square to the target line. Some will need to adjust based on their level of flexibility. Trevor is very flexible as you and see in his follow through.
