hybrids vs old school callaway 7 and 9 woods

Last week in Play It Again Sports I picked up a Callaway War Bird heavenwood and 9 wood .Both with the stock Callaway graphite shafts.I played with them on Friday and Saturday and found them to hit higher and longer than any hybrid I have tried.They were great from the fairway or the rough. I paid 14.99 per club and really hit them better than my Ping g2 hl's Does anybody play the Callaway 's instead of 3 and 4 irons or hybrids?

I play the original Steelhead 7 and 9 woods and love them. I have the old Pro Force 65 (ATR in the 7 wood, Pro Force 65 in the 9 wood). Favorite clubs in my Callaway bags. I also have a PING TiSI tec 7 wood with a Grafalloy Pro Launch Blue in my PING Bag that I love as well. Wish they made a 9 wood!

I switch back and forth between a FT Fusion 4H hybrid (23*) and a Warbird Divine Nine 9 wood (24*). I played that old 9 wood for years and it is like a trusted friend. Very hard to kick out of the bag for more than a day or two here and there.

Same with my 5 wood. I switch it in and out with a Steelhead III and a FT Fusion 3H hybrid. I love the Steelhead III 5 wood but when I play one of my regular courses the rough is pretty tough stuff and the hybrid's will play out of it a little easier than the slightly larger faced wood's. However, I agree with you that as far as play-ability, you will not find too many wood's any easier to hit than that old Big Bertha Warbird 9 wood.

I think it is up to what work's best in different situations and conditions. I like the modern technology in hybrid's but it is hard to pass up the tried and true fairway wood. Both beat long iron's in my book any day.

Callaway s2h2 5 wood as hybrid replacement

 

Interesting thread to me because I took a very old, very original Callaway s2h2 5 wood out of the basement and onto the course for a few rounds recently.

 

It has some great shots in it; the head is so small ( not really any bigger than most hybrids) that I can hit it solidly out of the rough as well. At the end of the day, it ended up back in the basement because the original "Memphis 10" ( whatever that means) steel shafts seems so so heavy all of a sudden after years of playing graphite shafts in FW and hybrids.

 

 

that original callaway 5 wood was a great club though.

 

Anybody now the loft on the callaway s2h2 5 wood? callaway used to keep the lofts and shaft flex information pretty secret.

The loft of the S2H2 5 wood is 18*. You can find that information on the Callaway Golf website under clubs; classic club specs.

Ran ito a few people who realy like the old Warbirds. In particular they like the way they hit off the fairway and light rough. I see a few here and there at the local GG. I just wonder.... can they be reshafted? Might be a waste of money to do so, but if they do hit well off the deck and light rough, that's a club that I could use!
